Good converter for low compression 340
« on: September 29, 2008 - 09:23:32 PM »
What would be a decent converter for a low compression 340 challenger. I have rmp airgap intake, 750 carb, and headers. 323 rear. its the torqueflite. It is slow taking off.     :clueless:

It's in his post, torqueflite and 3.23 gears. I would use a 2000-2500 stall.

But if he is running a cam that has a powerband that starts at 1500 or below then I don't think I would get a stall.

Torqueflite could be 727 or 904. What are your cam specs? I bet it is too big.

Torqueflite could be 727 or 904.

BIG difference on a low compression small block.  There's a good reason they used the 904 with the 2.74 low gear in the 318's in the later years. One of those with even a stock convertor and a 3.91 or 4.10 gear would make a world of difference, even with a decent cam. A convertor change won't.  :2cents:

It is a basically stock 73 challenger rallye. 14" wheels 245s, eddy RPM airgap, headers, 3.23 rear suregrip, 750 performer, cam is stock .429 int .444 ex or .286 and .296 at lifter. It will burn the tires for about 75 feet and chirps the tires in third sometimes. Just feels sluggish getting started. Is it a 727 or a 904? Seems like it changes into second gear way early? thanks   :burnout:

So it smokes the tires for 75 feet and it's sluggish in 1st gear?  Maybe because it's not hooking up??  :clueless:

You can tell a 904 from a 727 by the shape of the pan. The one on top is the 727. The 904 is square with one angled corner like on the bottom.

It's like there is a pause before the tires brake loose. Then all   :swear:  breaks loose. little slow before things start to happen.  :dunno:

Sounds like engine tuning problems.

:iagree:  Maybe your accelerator pump. Look down in the carb and make sure it squirts gas with the slightest movement of the throttle.
