Tranny Acting Weird
« on: September 30, 2008 - 09:43:06 PM »
So I finally drove my cuda after 15 years.

I am running an XV kickdown cable, and with it hooked up the tranny is acting weird, you have to rev it up to get it in gear..and driving down the road,  it feels like it is poping in and out of gear. At idle it comes out of gear and you have to rev it up to get it to go.

I unhooked the kickdown and it works much better, stays in gear going down the road and at idle, but of course you have to manually shift it.

Is this just a kickdown adjustment, or am I into something bigger?

Trans is out of 1980 New yorker and is a lock up unit if that matters.

KD adjustment, with the cable on mine it was a very fine adjustment to get it right.

Tom

BTW do not continue to drive it that way you will burn up the trans without the KD.

The TV adjustment has nothing to do with it going into gear. It sounds like it is low on fluid. Did you check it idling in NUETRAL?

So any advie you can give me on the adjustments???

I hope to have some time on sat / sun to work on it, but with the onset of my daughters hockey season, I may not get much time.

Check your fluid first,I think you are gonna find it is low and maybe cure all your troubles. The adjustment is as follows: With the carb all the way to the floor, the TV lever on the trans should be maxed out all the way back.

I did check the fluid, it was low, and I filled it up, but I will check it again, I may have done it with the car in park... :clueless:

With the cable on mine and fluid at correct level it would shift fine until the 2-3 shift if the KD was just a smidgen tight on the aftermarket cable.  When I loosened it up the shift was mint, I'm talking 1/16" of an inch here.  Before I would have to lift a bit to get it in 3rd at a mild cruise.

Tom

Ya if you checked the level in park it will be low too in Nuetral
