I voted for a 70 R/T.  I love the lines of those cars, especially the front end.  I plan on converting mine over, it was a 318 non rallye that isn't numbers matching anymore so I won't feel bad putting it under the knife.

I can't believe you would go thru the trouble to make it a 70 or 71, so I voted make it a 74 Ralley.

i have always liked the grille and especially the taillights of the 70 .. but i have had my 74 for 14 years and i am not getting rid of it.. i am getting ready to strip it down and do the minor body work it needs and paint anyway so i was thinking that changing the tailpanel is just a bunch of spot welds anyway right? and the front should be pretty basic, even easier if i get some 70 fenders.. plus i was already planning on using the early bumper brackets and removing the sidemarkers ...
but i have been looking at the parts to do this and that may kill the project right there.... :violin:

Nothing about the change is going to be basic.  Be ready for many many hours of cutting and welding and fabricating, and several thousand $ more than if you were just doing a resto of you 74.  Be sure and look into all the fine details before you start, and make sure you are committed to it.  It has been done before, including several members here, so you will have plenty of help.

Buy this month's Mopar Muscle.  They are doing this exact project.  It will be done over the coarse of several issues, but this is the start.

I agree
For a start, see my post above.  It's been done before, but you're not going to find a comprehensive How-To book or list, you're just going to have to do a lot of research.

I voted for Rallye as it`s a lot of work/$ but if you are going to change it I like the `71 grille better then the `70.

It's really not that big of a deal to get the 74 to look like a 70. If you want everything to be exact, it is not worth doing. You are looking at changing around 60 plus items to be exact and many of them are welded items. For the 70 look on exterior you will need, tail light panel, tail lights, both Bumpers and brackets, side marker lights, fenders, hood molding, grille ,headlight bezels, and misc. brakets. For the interior you will need the front seats, the shifter if automatic, and a complete dash assembly. The 70 headliner is different. To mount it you need 70 headliner rods and the clips that hold them. Your 74 roof does not have the slots for the clips to mount. It really isn't worth changing. Most people will not notice the headliner is a 74. After this the car will look like a 70.

Its a lot to change, that's for sure, especially if you want to do it so its correct. Even just to do the grille is expensive and time consuming, with a lot more parts than you might think (I thought it would be easy too!). You can get away with not doing the complete fenders, but you'll still need the headlight buckets and assembly off of a 70 or 71. You also need a new header panel, latch/upright, the grille itself, headlight bezels, hood trim, etc. The grille itself is pretty pricey if its in good condition, and the headlight bucket assemblies have to be spot welded in. You can buy inserts for the marker lights and weld them in, or look for scrap pieces to do the conversion also.

I've been gathering all the parts to convert the front end of my '72 to a '70 or '71. Just like the look of those grilles better. Strangely enough I like the tail lights on the '72-4 better, and I have no plans to change the interior since I really don't care if it doesn't look like a correct 70/71. I just want it to look like I want it to, and since I'm starting with a non-rallye, non numbers matching, 318/auto I'm not too worried about it. I also plan on keeping the '72 stuff if I want to change it back. But I'm still collecting parts, and so far it hasn't been cheap!

Why not buy a 70 or 71? For me at least it seems that the '72-4 cars are quite a bit cheaper to start with, although I'm not sure it would end up being a savings to convert it over, especially to be 100% correct. Unless of course you already had to replace those parts. My fenders already need work in the front (rust), and my grille isn't in very good shape either. So that may offset some of it.

It won't be worth anything more unless you go the whole way though, and maybe not even then. It will probably be worth less as a partial conversion, since it won't be a correct '74 either...
