Vacuum advance with solenoid?
« on: October 01, 2008 - 06:05:28 PM »
I have this vacuum advance unit off my distributer but I don`t think it`s correct for my 70 383 rr.It is a large unit with a solenoid part # 3438262,what is the application and which unit do I need?Anyone have a `70 383 with the original distributer still in it?The distributer # is correct- 3438234 but the vacuum advance unit is the 3438262 number.    :dunno:

I don't have the part numbers in front of me, but the ignition retard solenoid was a feature of the 1970 383/335hp engine. If the numbers are vital to you, I will rummage around in my shed and see if I still have the original distributor hanging around. Mine was an early build from a Dodge Superbee, but the parts should be the same. The ignition retard feature was there to prevent dieseling after engine shutdown, due to the high idle speed of the 383 HP engine.

the distributor retard solenoid was part of the CAS (Cleaner air system) emission control package for 1970, if you don't need it, sell it on ebay.....that's what I did with mine...
search for CAS system, I posted some images from the manual a number of months ago...

So it is correct for all 70 383 hp cars or just cars that came with the CAS package?

I don't know which ones for sure. Maybe one of the numbers gurus can chime in here. The manual doesn't specify. On the ebody, the CAS package included the distributor retard solenoid, specific holley carb * on my car * with the ground connector, 2 port valve cover breather and the vapor seperator (large tube in the trunk area) and the gas tank with the expansion tank within it (4 hoses seperate from the fuel feed on the sender) and a different gas cap.

Clarified after Al's post - didn't know they had them with the carter.

I had a 70 chrysler 300 hurst. It had a 440 tnt  375 hp engine with a carter. It had one of those solenoids on the advance too.

I have a bunch of pics of 70 383 rr and some have the solenoid style and some don`t but of course I don`t know which cars are "correct" restos.Would the CAS package be coded on the fender tag or just the biuld sheet?

pretty sure it would be on both, I don't know what the code is though. an easy giveaway is if the car has the vapor return tube on the upper part of the passenger inner fender and the 2 port breather

My Superbee had the Ramcharger fresh-air package, and that also may have been a reason for the distributor. Do you have your original camshaft? That may hold an answer. Mine (gone now) was a 276/292 camshaft, not the unit popularly quoted as the "Magnum" cam. I show no listing for the CAS in my literature, but it might be covered under N95. If I still had any of the stuff from my 'Bee that helld that information, I might be of more help. I will dig in the shed tomorrow, and get back with you on the result. As I recall, I just swapped the distributor out for a Mallory dual-point that was centrifugal advance only, and shelved the stocker. Wish me luck in my quest, as that was in 1986, and the "collection" has moved a few times.

My road runner came as a shell with lots of boxes and so I don`t know how it came from the factory.

I couldn't find the distributor, but I did a little research in my library, and came up with some information on the CAS for 1970. It wasn't coded on the option list because it was installed on all engines built in 1970. On the six-pack and hemi cars, this included a throttle-stop solenoid; on the "lesser" engines, it included the ignition-retard solenoid. This was supposed to give a lower initial timing setting at curb idle, to help lower emissions and lower the possibility of dieseling on shutdown. The solenoids are failure-prone, and the system was always a pain to deal with. If you want originality, put it on; if you want driveability, use a different distributor. The contents of the Cleaner Air System depended upon the vehicle's ultimate destination; those with more restrictive emissions requirements got cars with the California package, and those that did not have such tight regulations to contend with, got the package with the less-complicated vapor systems. With cold-air induction, and the Chrome Dress-up package, my Superbee came with a valve cover breather that only had one nipple, and the lugs for the exhaust manifold heat stove ground off. Standard equipment for the CAS was a breather with 2 nipples, and a heat stove with ductwork leading to the left snorkel of the air cleaner. My car was also an early build, and came with what is commonly referred to as the "1969" HP intake manifold. My engine also was built with the oil pan that has baffles both fore and aft of the sump, and of course, the windage tray.

I may just put it on for looks and defeat the solenoid or possibly the whole vacuum advance and just run the recurved mechanical-look stock but go better!Do you have any part numbers or anyone have one of these units as mine is junk?

that's the problem there are no replacements. Swap it out with a regular one
