Correct 70 Challenger antenna

to my understanding AM radios had the solid mast and the AM/FM had the extendable,. I do have antenna kits and parts in stock from metro if needed

It makes sence to me but i am not 100% certain. But that is how I have under stood the difference. am solid, am/fm extenable.

My car was owned since it was one year old in my family. 71 Barracuda Gran Coupe.  was equipped with AM/FM thumbwheel, solid mast antenna. Is it the other way around? AM had the extendable?

Unless the car was built when the '72's were built it would have come from the factory with a telescoping antenna.

Car has a build date Oct. 70. I know for a fact it came with the solid mast. It was bought in 72' perfect condition 1 year old. Also had the 70 seat belt holder center console in it.

Irregardless, I'm not gonna lose any sleep over having a solid mast with my Jensen CD player stereo. It works fine picking up the FM stations, and if anybody ever comes up to me and says it has the wrong antenna mast for a '71 Challenger I'll mention it also has the wrong fenders, the wrong heads, the wrong cam, Intake, exhaust, rims, brakes, non-OEM seat covers and headliner, heater hoses, battery, convertor, (you get the idea...  )

I always find it interesting when a car came with a part on it that was not available until a later date, in this case a year later.

I do not have a 1972 E-Body owners manual, but I checked my A, B, & C body manuals. No mention of an extendable antenna (once again!) for the 1972 model year.

If anyone has any PROOF otherwise, I am all ears. I do love to learn new things..............

As FM became the norm they switched to fixed mast (measure 'em 31") because of FM reception needing it.
with AM radio reception.....the taller the better, but 31" works ok....

My stock '67 (pardon me) chevy has factory FM/fixed attenna.

The 1972 Challenger owner's manual does not mention anything relating to an extendable antenna in the radio section.

I wonder if the telescoping antenna only came with the AM/FM radio option. You don't need an adjustable mast for a single band radio.

I is my understanding that the telescopic one was for 70 and early 71 and the solid was for late 71 and after...

Every early 70's Mopar I've owned had a solid mast antenna. I lost track after 40 cars. There were LOTS of 70 E-bodies in there, but no, I have no actual proof. I was 4 in 1970.

I'm going to guess that the telecoping antennas broke or were vandalized frequently, so maybe there was a silent recall? A mass replacement? Can y'all say Aspen Fender?
