Gas Tank
« on: October 03, 2008 - 10:04:36 AM »
I just noticed my gas tank is leaking in my 73 Cuda.....what are my options as far as a replacement?  Does it have to be from another 73 or are all e-body gas tanks interchangable?  Plus, would it be cheaper to put a 12-14 gallon fuel cell in instead?  The car is no racer....just a simple 360 auto but I will have a 440 for it soon (in process of being built) and I want to get it mini-tubbed, hence the question about the fuel cell.

Thanks!

Are you sure it's the tank & not a bad seal at either the filler tube or sending unit?

New replacements specifically for the '73, although others would work, can be had for as little as $150, seems to be only 1-made sold by everyone sometimes at vastly different prices.... get a new filler tube grommet while your at it and at least a new "sock" filter for the sending unit... another $20-30

I know it's not the filler tube, as it's dry all the way.....it could be the sending unit seal b/c the leak is close to that, but I have to get the rear tire off and double check that.  From the looks without the tire off, it appears the seal around the unit is dry....

if you need to repalce the tank get one from Spectra [SPI] they are high quality & fit & look identical to the old one
Almost every tank is different , Cuda & Chall have the inlet in different places & different years have different vent hook ups

You might want to check the short rubber hose going from the sending unit to the solid fuel line. It might be dry-rotted and cracked.
