Guess my weight
« on: October 06, 2008 - 03:40:03 PM »
I've always wondered what the weight of these cars were (70 small block E bodies). I have been told everything from 3400 to 3800 (!) depending on options.  Honestly, I have always thought that my car could be no more than 3400-3500 hundred if not less. Not a huge car, unit body...some heavy body panels but that's about it. Plus I have things like no AC, mild steel headers saving weight over cast manifolds, aluminum intake manifold, Weld Prostar wheels plus all the little things that have been discarded throughout the years making the engine bay appear pretty empty. Only weight that I can think of that has been added is the MSD box and some gauges.  Curious as to what everyones guesstimate would be on the weight of my car.

Sweet, thanks. I might just take it to the local metal scrapping yard for weighing...just don't want them getting a hold of it with the big magnet by mistake! :dogpile: I'd be happy with around 3500 w/o driver. Man, 3900...that's heavier than I would have ever imagined...even with a bigblock.

Problem is a lot of people think that just because an E body is shorter that it should weigh less than a B body. Fact is that isn't always true as the extra length of a B body is most air and sheet, not structure. Additionally, E bodies are wider, which translates to greater weight for critical structural items like K frames and axles.

not exactly true as the B & E body use the same front suspension & K frame

Take a look in the trunk of a 70 Road runner or Charger and sit in the rear seat and the difference will be very obvious. E-bodies have shorter wheelbases and they are lighter.

Most e-body cars are heavier than B-bodys. Heavier than the pre-70 b-bodies at least.

My Challenger weighed 3950lbs with me (175lbs at the time) and only a little gas in the tank. This is after removing the air-con, ally intake, and fitting a plastic front bumper.

But this was just a public weighbridge. The best way it to get all four corners weighed at a track event or something.

Not quite that much but heavy enough. One side was like 28 lbs and the other was 32 , I do believe. The 74"s have an impact plate under the rear panel where the window rolls up.  The door bars are tack welded in and fairly easy to remove. But they are there on street cars for a safety reason. Although I did remove mine too.

This is a subject of great debate. With all the restored cars here we should be able to get a valid database of weights for the different years,
at least the E-bodies in stock condition. I wouldn't be much help with glass fenders and Willwood brakes and Centerline rims and alloy heads and Intake. I have a thing about not spending money on parts unless I can also drop some car weight in the process (This does not apply when I eat out... )

Any volunteers?  :dunno:

it is very interesting subject, as to what real weight is verses what factory specs. say, actually i have wilwood brakes and they are alot lighter especially for unsprung weight, i have a glass hood i can weight verses a steel hood , ill weigh them as soon as i get time i think there is some weight difference, how much we will soon find out!
