Grinding noise
« on: October 06, 2008 - 04:41:51 PM »
I had taken out my sb727 trans to replace the "O" ring and shaft seal and gasket and  seated the torque converter. When I spin the torque converter, there is a grinding noise in just one spot. I really don't want to put it back in the car with that noise unless it's normal. Can anyone give me some idea what it is?

As you spin it, is the tq all the way pushed in? Or pulled back just a bit like as in the installed running condition?  The hub can rub the pump all the way in and also the flexplate keeps the tq in the correct centered position.

I just went and looked and what it's doing is the teeth on the converter is hitting the casing on the bottom. It never did that before. Will the flex plate center it when I install it?

Yes it should. I figured that was something you were experiencing

Thanks Moparal. I just wanted to make sure before I put it all the way back in and it was still rubbing.

Well I re-installed the trans, started it in nuetral, filled it up and it still leaks in the front as bad as it always has, and now it won't come out of park. What now?

Can you tell where the leak is coming from?

I had a converter drain plug leak quite a bit last time.

It must be a converter weld or the hub.

I was thinking that when I filled up the trans and I "thought" the trans was in nuetral when it was really in park, would that make it leak?

It shouldn't. Did you put a new front pump seal in it? It'll leak like an 85YO with bad kidneys if the seal is nicked.

It could, but it will eventualy stop after you bump it through the gears. Did you run it long enough (in neutral) to see if it quit?

It's real easy to screw up that pump seal installing it. I tap it in gently making sure to go equally on each side until it's seated, and I always use a little silicone in the hole. It's equally easy to screw up the front pump seal surface taking the old seal out. I also check the fit of the seal on the vert hub to make sure it's the right seal before I put it in and make sure the hub has no sharp edges on the notches that will cut it. Sounds like alot to do but it beats hell out of pulling the tranny back out when it leaks.  :2thumbs:
