Viscous fan for a 70 440 six pack
« on: October 06, 2008 - 06:53:23 PM »
Hello all, i am having issues with mine running hot, has a new water pump, new thermo, radiator seems good, and fresh flushing, but it seems to still be running hot.  A buddy came over, and seems to think the fan might not be working correctly.  It doesn't seem to be too expensive of a fix.  My question is, who makes the most accurate reproduction for a 70?  I know when it is on, you can't really see it, but i will know.  Thanks in advance

Luke

How is the block up under the freeze plugs?  If it is not clean, the cooling system will not work. Sludge build up on cylinder walls causes hot spots. Same with sludge in the heads. Also the wrong water pump can cause issues. Same with fuel jetting and timing.

So many things affect cooling systems. Poor circulation is a killer.  I run a clean fresh block/head set up. 440-6 engine, 22 inch radiator 3 row,non ac pump. Good pump housing, 185 thermostat, fan shroud, and factory single pullies. I was driving in 100 degree temps in town and had no overheating issues. The faster a/c pumps flow water to quick. A lower rad hose colapsing will cause heat problems . I got a factory non thermal clutch and an original 6 blade fan.

Blockage or worn housings cause most issues. Impropper mixed cooling items causes another. Engine tune is another.

Do you have a fan shroud?

I have a fan shroud on it, and the water pump is a brand new one from 440 source.  I have flushed the system, but antifreeze looked bad again after only 3 months.  How many times should you have to do this?  The timing was set by a mechanic i trust.....

If the anti-freeze is looking bad, I would suspect a rusty/crusty radiator.   :dunno:  If it is rusted inside, then the flow will be restricted.

I know where to get radiators, how about the fan and clutch?  I would like it to look original.

No one makes a reproduction original. you have to send your original one in. I sent mine in February and am getting it back this week.

Get the fan on e bay. Theres plenty of them on there. Wait a few weeks and one is sure to surface if you don't see one right away.

You may want to consider knocking out most of the freeze plugs and flushing the block real good since wintewr is around the corner. If you got crud in the radiator, then the block has a layer of sludge. It would give you some satisfaction doing this. It is amazing how much goo you can get out of the block.
