Are 833 4 speeds easy to rebuild complete?
« on: October 07, 2008 - 09:00:51 AM »
I am pretty good at taking things apart and putting them back together. I need to rebuild my 4 sp. It whines as you go down the road in the gears, it also jumps out of 4th when it isnt under a load. Everything else seems ok. So I want to install a master rebuild kit when I can get one and find the time.

I have snap ring pliers and stuff like that, but in short, is it a basicly simple task?  Has to be easier then an automatic I would assume. Identifying bad parts would be the hardest task to me so it seems.

it is relatively easy to do , you need to use something for a dummy shaft to install the lower cluster gear with all the brgs in place , maybe I will have to show you how to do it

It is pretty easy to do. I used the heater hose trick on the lower cluster worked like a charm.

Hey CP, maybe we should just do a video of you teaching everyone. I just bought a backup and I'm trying to work up the guts to do what Al's talking about.

Alan,

If you are in no hurry, and someone doesnt beat me to it, i can pull/help pull out the tranny and you can rebuild it on the bench while i get my stuff in... just a thought.

Use a piece of 3/4" conduit to hold the gears in place..

Now that would be awesome!  You could break it up into segments so that it could be uploaded on photobucket or putfile.

I agree with everyone else, its pretty easy to do. I used a broom handle as a dummy shaft for the lower cluster, but anything of relative size will work as you can see from the other posts. Basically, take your time pulling it apart, make note of where everything goes, replace what looks worn or has play in it, and put it back together in opposite order. Remember some little tricks like using grease to hold items in place, heat/cool certain parts to press them in easier, and other stuff of that sort. One other tip I have is to use a little rtv around the end of the lower cluster shaft to seal it to the case, learned that one a little too late :stomp:

I've said it before, so I'll say it again ( in a post last Jan. actually ) :

Finally found a good site for rebuild info:

This one is good for the Auto to 4 speed conversion:

Good bearings for the imput and output shafts might be difficult to find. The originals were made by SKF, but they no longer produce them. Passon bought out all the remianing stock out there. Passon wants $90 a piece for them now. What everyone else offers is a Chinese made bearing. Not sure that I would trust those that much.
