Yeah, we have customers all the time who are surprised we aren't lowering our prices a bunch.  They know that what they pay to fill their gas tank has been cut in half in the last two months, but they pay no attention to diesel prices.  Fuel surcharges are almost gone though.

Greg, what is the fuel surcharge? Is this on diesel only? :dunno:

I still find it so ignorant that they have left the diesel prices so jacked up compared to gasoline. Hell, they get the diesel for free while refining the crude. They know they have a market held captive so they do what they want. Gas all around this area is at or under 2 dollars a gallon yet the cheapest we can get it here......35 miles from a refinery is 2.39   :clueless:  :dunno:  :banghead:

The new boom is calming down and they are squeezing every extra cent out of us that they can. I think I saw where one oil companies profits for last year were like 14 billion dollars. That is a pretty damn good year no matter how you slice it!!!

Fuel surcharges are a little extra we tack on above the base rate for the bus to cover the extra cost of fuel.  It became very common in the commercial vehicle world about four years ago when diesel prices started to climb.  When fuel prices were at their height a few months ago, we had surcharges as high as 12%.  Now those charters that get surcharged at all are only being charged 2%.  Of course, the base rates have risen, since fuel isn't the only thing that got more expensive.

It's true that diesel comes from the same barrel of crude as gasoline.  However, in 2007 the EPA started the implementation of Ultra Low Sulfer Diesel fuel (ULSD) to substantially cut emissions from diesel engines.  The implementation of this standard is driving up the price of fuel because not all refineries can make it and not all grades of crude can be used.  In addition, world demand for diesel has climbed along with demand for crude in general, but at a higher rate relative to other petroleum distallates, which exacerbates the run-up in prices.  Diesel is also typically taxed at a higher rate than gasoline.  You can read about it here:  http://www.eia.doe.gov/bookshelf/brochures/diesel/

Not too long ago home heat aka 2 oil and diesel were one and the same,,,,,, stored in same tank delievered in same truck,  brought to the tank farm in the same barge,,,,, but now we have   seperate fuels and transport and storage,,,,,,,  its way more exspansive to handle diesel than it was not too long ago  and that has a lot to do with why diesel is now more costly than gas....:(.......

                                      1  #2 home heat
                                      2   Off road diesel (dyed)

I paid $1.97/gal yesterday in Minooka, IL (outside Joliet) and it cost $39.34 to fill up my Explorer from near empty - the first sub-$40 fill-up in I can't remember how long!

Mike

P.S.:  Sad how a $40 fill-up is somehow good.
