833 gear wear?
« on: October 10, 2008 - 06:34:51 PM »
I'm looking at the 833 I want to get rebuilt and trying to decide what needs replaced and if I can even find it. the TSM says replace any gears that have excesive wear, what's that? the only wear I can see is on the 3-4 clutch gear, it's noticable but even and smooth so would that be considered excessive? all I know about the tranny is it worked when the car got wrecked. I'm not sure how to figure what amount of wear and in what places will give me a problem, maybe there is a place with pictures of worn gears to use as a reference?

I've never even heard of someone replacing gears in an 833.  They are very tough.  I've heard that gears and shafts are hard to find as there is very low demand.  I had syncros and bearings replaced but that was it.  Brewers is the place to go although I used a local shop to do the work.  It is a simple design and can be repaired on a DIY basis.

Passon Performance also sell virtually all the parts for an 833 if needed , if the 36 small teeth that mesh with the syncro hub are chipped or broken you probably shoudl replace the gear depending on how many & how badly damaged they are , the gears get expensive fast

My 833 I bought in America last year for rebuilding is a basket case, somebody has done something wrong in the past. The rear extension housing is broken where the rear bearing clips in. Both the input shaft and main shaft spigot bearings are destroyed making both useless. I have had this situation before and know somebody who can rebuild the shafts but all the gears are badly pitted, so its another box for me. Because I bought it for rebuilding and it felt tight I didn't bother taking off the side cover and having a look.   :banghead:

I've purchased two A833 OD's in the last 6 months to convert my 904, both look nearly brand new inside. Unless the box has been abused or misassembled the gear wear shouldn't be the biggest issue. I've seen a couple of sets of gears on Ebay, but they don't seem to be on there all the time or in any big numbers.
