-489 rebuild
« on: October 14, 2008 - 04:09:00 PM »
I will try to rebuild my -489 diff but find the servicemanual difficult to understand, don't have all the c-tools. I have a big play between ring and pinion
so I wonder if I need to remove the pinion or only set the "backlash"? In the installationkit from Richmond there was a sleeve included, could that
be a solid one or a chrashtype? Any good links or threads for easy learnings?

I believe there is a conversion kit to get away from the original crush sleeve design.  Is this what came with the Richmond kit?  You could check Yukon's website too at http://www.yukongear.com/Downloads/Technical_Help/Installation_Kit_Instructions.pdf

Very helpful, Thanks  :2thumbs:

I read that some types of the -489 are not rebuildable, how do I know I don't have that type and can't you even change ring and pinion
on those ones?  :clueless:

I think that refers to the cone clutch posi unit, but you can even extend the life of those (at least I saw that on here somewhere..) You can absolutely change the ring and pinion.

What about only adjusting the backlash and don't touch the pinion, is that an option?

No risk that the ring and pinion has got used to eachother with that play/backlash and if I adjust to correct level other problems would occure?

I'd think the more lash there is, the more strain it puts on the teeth of the pinion and ring gears.  :dunno:

I don't think you will have a strength problem, but you might have a noise problem if the back lash was way off and the gears got "run in" that way. You have to pull it out to change any adjustment so in my book ,take it all apart and check everything out while you have it apart. :2cents:

If you want you can leave me a pm. I'm from the netherlands, and speak dutch so that's a little easier. Plus I've got some experience in rebuilding rear-ends.

Hoped you would have told me to go for the backlashadjustment but I have learned to listen to experience so a total rebuild it will be.
