Looking for taller tires on 14" rallies.
« on: October 14, 2008 - 05:46:10 PM »
I put 215 60 s on my 70 Challenger.  Is there a taller tire that might help fill the wheel well?  It simply doesn't look right.  Do I need to find some 15" rallies to look right?

225 and 70 series on a 14" rim is as tall as you can go. That gives you a 26" wheel. Even if you were to go to 15", you would need a 8" wide wheel to go taller.

Depending on the width rim, I think for a 14x6" rim you MIGHT be able to fit a 235/60-14 tire back there.  Call up a tire shop to see what can be safely mounted back there, I know NTB has a little book they use to see what can fit on what rim.  They told me a 225/70-14 tire will not be safe to put on a 14x5.5" rim with that book.

I have 215/70-14 up front and 225/70-14 in the rears on 6" wide rims.  Makes it look a little fatter inthe rear.

A picture would be great! are 235 higher than 225?  I would think so but some one said above 225s sit 26" high and that was as tall as you could get?

235 is higher than a 225, but I mentioned 225 being the tallest you could get in a 70 series tire on a 14" rim. If you go to a 60 series or something else, it's another ball game.

I would have to look into this further but I believe the 235/60 tire is shorter as only 60% of the section width is on the sidewall whereas the 225/70 tire has 70% of the section width on the side wall.

So the 60 series will be shorter but wider, 70 series taller and thinner for the #s above.... I think...  :1zhelp:

FWIW, I used to have Bridgstone 235/60's on the front and 245/60's on the back. They looked nice and wide but bulged out a bit too much on my 14x6's for my liking. Also, they didn't give me the height I wanted, my low lying exhaust would always scrape going up my driveway and sometimes over speed bumps. Now I have BF Goodridge Radial T/A  215/70's all around. I think I would have been better off with 225/70's though.

Ok, here's a nice tire size calculator for the fun of it.

http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

Some tire heights....

215/70-14= 25.9"

225/70-14= 26.4"

235/60-14= 25.1"

245/60-14= 25.6"

215/60-14= 24.2"

FYI= I think the 225/70-14 tire is what is typically run on late 60's/early 70's B-bodies.  The 225/70-14 tires/rims I have came from a '70 Road Runner.  The tires that came on my Challenger were 215/70-14 size.
