It sounds like a wise decition to walk away from this one. There will be a better one for what you want to pay just down the road.

:iagree:  You don't know what else the guy wasn't being up front about and you don't want to find out later on.  It'll just give you a bad feeling about the car and you'll never be able to enjoy it to it's fullest.

Eh, don't give up on the Viper thing, just keep looking, let us know what you find!  :grinyes:

I did offer to pay for an inspection.  I wanted the car checked out top/bottom/inside-and-out because I wanted to know what was hidden.  I think he was trying to avoid the inspection because he KNEW there was something else wrong with it.  I located his nearest dealer, contacted them, got a name and number and made them aware that I was paying for it.  All he had to do was take it by/drop it off.  He refused, so he lost the sale.

Thanks for the support, everyone.

Jeff

P.S.  He is now trying to sell an H1 Hummer on Ebay.  I have notified Ebay that I suspect him of trying to hide details of the vehicles and consider him a "high risk" seller.

He messed with the wrong guy.  He messed with the ViperMan!

Buying a car sight unseen is always hard. I did it three times. First time it turned out to be a good buy, but definately had some hidden stuff. Second time I nearly lost my shirt. Then the third time the car turned out better then expectiing. Its always a hard thing, taking a step back and a break from the search is always a good tihng, the right car will come along. I looked at tons of cars on the internet, and found myself wanting to find something so bad I was talking myself into buying certain cars, and making excuses why this  one would suit me, etc etc etc, little did I know the best car out there was sitting right under my nose for about 6 months before I bought it.  If Hemi71 had a viper for sale, i'd reccomend buying it...lol. I know i'll buy the next car he sells that i'm interested in.   :2thumbs:

Sounds like he was hiding a lot more about the car. Glad to see you walked on this one. I like reading your threads on your Viper search. Good luck on the hunt and keep us posted.

Sounds like a scam.....but of a different kind.....he probably does own the car and is selling it, but it's probably in rougher shape than he's letting anyone believe.  So when you started inquiring about the scratches and all, he probably figured you were no dummy, which he then made up the excuse to relist for more $$$.

You're better off anyhow.....get something you really want and can be confidant in buying.   :2thumbs:

I told him what I was looking for, but I don't expect someone to go fighting my fight at this point.  No sense in him trying to go around and find stuff for me.  Besides, I think the kind of the people who join the VCA don't turn around and sell their cars when things get rough.  They'd probably sell their HOMES first, as I think a lot of people from this board would.  I'm looking for the guy who really doesn't care much about his Viper and is just trying to make some quick money.  They'll drop the price just to sell it.  For now, I'm looking for that guy - at least until the market recovers.  At that point, if I don't have one already, I'll go back to saving and waiting.

Kinda related, kinda off-topic...

Do we have a listing of where members live?  I've looked at several cars on eBay over the course of time and have always wished I knew someone in the are that could drop by and take a look.  In this instance, it could've saved Viperman a lot of suspense, or given him the green light to buy.  Thoughts?

Several members have listed the state and sometimes the city where they live in the Members Roll Call thread (http://www.cuda-challenger.com/cc/index.php?topic=43243.0).  All members are encouraged to do so.  Beyond that, after you've been here awhile, you start to get a feeling for where people live.  Sometimes someone will be able to look at a car for another member, sometimes not.  While there are currently 6277 members registered, many are people who are not active on the forum on a regular basis (unlike us addicts - "porn site" indeed  :blah: :smilielol:).  There's probably fewer than 500 who check in on a regular basis - and by regular basis, I mean 2-3 times a month.  And, of course, not everyone reads every thread.  For example, I probably check out about 25% of new threads and clear them every time I sign out to try to keep the volume down -  and I'm on here almost daily.

My suggestion to anyone interested in having an independent inspection of a car is to ask for help on a separate thread in the Other Mopars/Off Topic area.  Sometimes it'll work out, sometimes not.  On his other Viper thread, Jeff inquired about someone being available to look at a car in L.A. for him, but no one responded except for one member, 67vertman, who lives about 75 miles away.  While there are about six members I know of in the Los Angeles region, no one else may have seen his request in a timely enough manner to help him out.  Other times, someone can help.  I post a thread weekly of interesting Mopars in my area and offer to look at any car someone is interested in and I may go look at a Sweptline Pickup for Wally426ci this weekend.  In that case, he started a thread indicating his interest in a Sweptline and several members have responded with possibilities.  Someone will find Jeff a good Viper when the time is right.

He obviously was hiding more information than what he must have disclosed to you.  That is the dumbest idea to get a deposit on the car PRIOR to having it inspected as he probably wouldn't have returned the deposit if it came back with a dirty record.  It just wasn't meant to be this time, Jeff.  There are other Vipers out there that are in mint/near mint condition for around that price figure, so I'd just wait it out for the right one. :2thumbs:
