Just saw another news story yesterday about another elder hitting the gas instead of the brakes....

Uh, I just have a quick question:

How did the car catch fire just from hitting a pole??  How fast was she going?  If she was making a turn, there shouldn't have been enough speed to cause that severe of a collision.  I sincerely hope they're investigating the cause of the fire.

I take it you've never seen how people drive in South Florida.  There's only two types of drivers down there, insanely fast or turtle show.  WAY too many elderly people driving down there.  I've seen plenty of  bad accidents for just the same reason.  My cousin had his 71 Duster 340 totalled by an elderly person that attempted a U-turn in front to of his house, rammed his Duster though his garage,  and into his 71 El Camino that was in the garage.  Luckily, he over slept that morning as he was planning on being under the El Camino at that time.

Well, to add some levity to the situation, if you have to go, it might as well be in a Dodge Challenger! 

With my luck I'll be in a Honda Accord...

  ;)Yep, after 18 years in South West Florida I can back this up. It is a common sight to see people on walkers totally incapable to even turn their heads on all kind of medications driving with 25 mph in the left lane thru Naples. Backing up on a parking lot without looking back, left turns from the right lane, etc. Nobody does anything !!! (Tax Money).
I have to prevent at least twice a day an accident caused by one of those drivers. But "God beware" if I drive 5 mph over the speed limit I get fined and have to join the "Speeders Anonymous".
Just this morning 3 minutes in to my ride a confused elderly turned right in front of me in to the oncoming traffic... we all avoided her and thanks God nothing happened, but she had no idea why those rude guys where honking at her... daily routine down here.
Thats why I only drive my beloved cars at night after the "early bird specials" are back @ home.
A 90 year old driving a 400 hp + car is as irresponsible to her, the passengers and the drivers as giving the same car to a 15 year old.
"When I am old I want to die peacefully in my sleep like my Grandpa did, not like his passengers screaming ...."
