70 Turn Signals Won't Work
« on: October 20, 2008 - 04:05:59 PM »
My 70 Challenger turn signals will not work. I am not sure whats up with them, but they are dead.  I have parking lights all around and the emergency flashers work.

Are the turn signals on a seperate circut from the 4-way flashers?

Maybe its just the flasher unit, how can I test the one in the car?  :clueless:

Thanks!

You should have 2 flashers. One is behind the ashtray the other is on the steering column :2thumbs:.   Do you have brake lights?

Thanks for the quick response

I do have brake lights - well sort of..... With the brakes on, when I turn on the turn signal to the right, the right side brake lights go off. Same thing for the left side. No turn signal, I have all brake lights.

That does sound like a flasher. You checked both?  Does the arrow light up in the dash?

The dash lights don't light at all, unless I turn the 4-ways on, then they both flash.

Sounds like a flasher, kind of figured, but was not sure. Which one would this be, ash tray or steering column?

 Thanks for your help

You will hear the flasher when you turn your emergency flashers on. If you hear that one flashing behind the ashtray, then it will be the other one on the right side of the steeriing colomn, Just above it on the bracket/brace.  To test you could pull the emergency brake 4 way flasher and install it on the blinker flasher for quick diagnostics

Ok, I pulled both flashers out and first tried the turn one in the 4-way - no go, probably bad as suggested.

I put the 4-way in the turn signal one and now I get turn signal flashes, but it acts like a 4-way. Right turn signal and I get Left & Right at the same time. Same for Left Turn.

This is really weird. The flashers each have a different part number  - 323-12V (works) and 552-12V (broken) but as far as I know they should function the same. I think I will just get two new ones and see what happens. If anybody has any thoughts on this, please let me know. Can wrong flashers cause the lights to not act correctly?, or do you have to have 2 good ones installed for it to work corrctly?  :clueless:

Make sure your emergency flasher switch is in the OFF position....you will get feedback through the L/R turn signal if its ON.

I feel like a dumb a$$ - yep, left the emergency flasher switch in the ON position during testing.  :banghead: Turned it off, and the directionals started working like they should.

Thanks for all the help, think I have this one fixed now.  :2thumbs:
