    I never even thought the work I was doing like this would cost so much or be worth that much.  Would hate to see the bill for my car after I am done with it with replacing almost all of the sheet metal in it.

    I am going to be getting quotes from two resto shops in the next week or so.  I am sort of scared!  We will see what the shops here in the Great White North can do. :canada:

    I have a 70 318 4spd Barracuda that I have owned since new, not a great fender tag car, but I know there is nothing hidden and it has survived two wives, a divorce, bankruptcy and four kids, so for me it is kinda special.

    It has rust on the very bottom of the rear 1/4s, a bit around the wheel wells, the bottom of the trunk extensions, and some in the rear window area, and that's about it.  The vinyl roof has the usual rust bubbles and rust under the back window trim.  Too bad, because the top is flawless still, but I guess it will have to go to fix the rust.The trunk is still pretty sound, surface rust but no holes.

    I am replacing the front floors myself but I am not confident enough in my abilities with bodywork to attempt the body panels.  I will be doing the carpets, upholstry and mechanical stuff myself. 

    I am stripping the bumpers, grill, trim, interior, etc myself to try to save a few $$.  (I HATE rusted bumper bolts!!!)  Cleaning and restoring this stuff myself is just time consuming, not a lot of money.

    I'm going to be using Rust Bullet on everything I can get at in the hope of preventing any more deterioration.

    So what I am going to have to pay a shop to do is repair:
        1/4s
        trunk extensions
        rear window channel
        wheel well lips
        a reasonable paint job
        roof rust
        replace vinyl roof 

    I want a driver, not a show winner, so I'm hoping to get those items done for less than $8000. 

    Y'all think I'm crazy?  :screwy: :screwy:

    I think you're going to have a heart attack when you get the quotes.  My guess is that you're going to be $15K or more.  The problem is you're going to have a hard time finding a shop that is going to do a "driver quality" job.  They're not going to stake their reputation on putting out a product that is not top notch (unless they are desperate for work).  If that's your budget, your best bet will be to try to do as much of the body work yourself or with a friend who had some experience, and then farm out the paint.  That alone could easily run you $8K+.  By the way, does your $8K include the parts?  That will run you at least $2K alone.

    Yeah. that is pretty much what I thought.  I guess that this is gonna be a slow, costly, frustrating experiance.  Oh well, It'll be something to keep me out of trouble!!!

    o man tanked two businesses and three exes maybe some structure would help maybe a job with good supervision ,restoration is a tough business .paint and body guys have a learning curve of at least 10 years and many will never make it in a restoration shop . its hard to focus on a 300 to 500 hour paint job another 200 plus hours in the details . the math looks like this a low end labor rate is 50 per hr  thats 700 x 50 = 35k plus materials shop space at least 20 x 40 some one has to pay the rent per foot  . now my question is how cheap will you work in your new shop , and should i let you learn on my car . im not interested in busting chops but we need to keep the industry strong . i would suguest a helpers job for a few years and at a minimum a business degree along with experienced help and a 100k in the bank to start . good luck on your car and future business venture . :2thumbs:

    I started in a body shop as an aprentis in 1969 and have done several restorations but mostly for myself at this time.  Just wait to see my car done and I will post pictures of it also.  I have done everything on the cars and I mean engines, transmissions, rear axles, brakes, wiring, body panel replacements, all kinds of body work and paint work.  I have done all of the interiors and several other things from bumper to bumper and top to down.

    yes strip it  body work and finish rub out .some could excede the 500 hours easily. :2thumbs:

    To me that would be really working slow on the car for sure.  Might take me that time now but I dont think so.  I think I can switch out all the panels I have for my car and get it painted in less than 500 hours.  Might be wrong but think I could if I had a few weeks to work on it straight.

    I take it that you think $8000 is not unreasonable for a car that is not a rustbucket and doesn't need massive repairs. I'm sure that the 500 hour paint job is fantastic, but not what I want.  I just want a nice daily driver.
