How much $$$ does a Rotisserie Restoration REALLY Cost ?
« on: October 21, 2008 - 04:10:36 PM »
I try to figure out how much it would cost me to do a "rotisserie" restoration on an average driver, no serious rust, but by far no show car. Prices must have come down a bit by now.
Lets assume all parts are at hand. I hear all kind of numbers some are very astronomical.
I know this question is very hypothetic and can only be in a ball park area. In your experience how much would a rotisserie project cost:
(please ad any steps I might have missed)

1. Taking car apart: $

2. Stripping paint / media blast:  $

3. Basic Rust repair, replace a few panels: $

4. Rebuilt 727 Transmission or 4-Speed: $

5. Rebuild Engine 383 or 440: $

6. Rebuild Axle:

7. Rebuild Brakes: $

8. Rebuild Suspension: $

9. Primer, Preparation and "top" paint job in high impact color: $

10. NOS Trimparts, Stickers, Tags, Seal, Rubber, etc : $

11. Re-chrome Parts: $

12. Interior Parts: $

13. Restore Radio / Tape / Clock / Rally Dash: $

14: Unexpected Parts / Unknown Reserve: $

A couple of questions: are you looking when finished to have an OE Gold Certified, are we talking about you doing the work yourself or sending it to a shop? Restoring a car to OE gold status can cost well beyond a quarter of a million dollars. Even a show winning restoration can cost more than 100k to do if sent out to a shop.

IMO - Although some prices have fallen a bit on cars . Labor and parts cost have stayed about the same or risen a bit.  I wouldn't expect a BIG$$ on a rotissery job...  :dunno:

SAVINGS THAT IS

I can do assembly, disassembly and most mechanical work. I can weld, but have not the experience to do perfect body work. This I would have to outsource.
I would like to get the car on a level where he is nice enough to win local shows but not too far gone that I will not drive it anymore.

Depending on how much body work and rust repair has to be done and which paint materials you use you are probably looking at anywhere between 20 and 50k. For example the clear I like to use cost roughly $1,000 a gallon, and you still need base, sealer and you primers and other materials. So high quality paint materials can cost more than $3,000 and then you still have to pay someone to do the work and that doesn't cover panel replacement either which can cost thousands of dollars for panels plus days of time for install.

Materials costs will be similar no matter where you are (in the Continental US anyway) but the difference will be labor. Where do you live? Just give general area if you are not comfortable sharing that info.
For example, I was quoted 200 hours to do a quality paint job on my car, not rotisserie. Depending where you live, that could be $20,000 (at $100@hr - San Fransisco Bay Area) or $6000 (at $30@hr). A ballpark figure I was given for a "restoration" to stock with just about all you mentioned excluding rust repair (because no one can accurately quote rust repair without seeing the car) was about $125k, again SF bay area.

So again, where do you live? And more importantly, what are the labor rates in your area?

 :dunno:

Another consideration is time, figure you will be without your car for over a year I would think AFTER getting the car into the shop. Anyplace that is doing high end quality work is going to be booked solid. The place that quoted me 20k for a paint job has an 18 month wait list.

I'm also curious on 72 Hemi's clear coat..$1000 a gallon??? Is it some crazy Glasurit or something? I think most colors are more expensive than the clear, so how much is the color you are using?

I want some of that 1K for a gallon stuff.  What is it?  Very interested.  I would assume that you could eat off of it and not scratch anything.  Probably cleans itself for that price.
  Very interested though, seriously.

I would guess the restoration with your imput will cost about what the car would sell for. (Less current core value which also determines parts/work needed.).

Really no need for that kind of comment Craigsmycuda. :screwy:

Wow , this person was asking a serious question that he thought was legit. Some dont realize all the economics in the world. When I first read his post, I immediately thought that labor never goes down and supplies either, so I knew the concept of his thinking wasnt accurate.

But even with all this, I dont think breaking it off in his azz is a justifiable remark. It doesnt really answer his question and actually shows disrespect for another member.  Please try to remember that we are amongst friends here and look up to one another to guide us not to embarrass us.

I have never seen you make a comment like this before. It struck me as rather odd and insensitive.  I may be out of line here, but thought I had to say something. We are all friends no matter how educated, wealthy, poor , color, you name it. We are here as one big society trying to understand our projects and conversing with others in any area of interest that may come up in a respectable statement or intelligent arguement.

Did I just type that :clueless:

I have not posted up here for some time let alone had a chance to check out others because I spend alomost all my time working to pay for my project which will run about 25 -30 K

After reading the comment from craigsmytcuda I gotta ask. What has happened to this site. A member asks a question and gets treated like that. What a shame

That post was out of line , not to mention the cost just might come down.  I've already had some folks in the car restoration biz tell me work is getting harder to come by. car guys are not immune to the economy, prices on some parts and services may very well drop a little as competition grows, times are tough all over.
