My experience with my ongoing resto of my -68 Charger R/T is that the partscost tends to rice along the projecttime. After breaking
down the car 18 months ago I estimated to buy approx 50% of the parts new and reuse the rest, today it's about 100% new parts.
When the new parts starts to arrive you look at the old ones and then it starts, why not buy that one aswell.
I estimate a cost of 40K including drivetrain but excluding body/paint, that beeing done by a friend for 20$/hour.
Partscost for me will be higher then for you in US since I have higher shipping and customcosts.

i think most of us, car repair smart or not have an idea of the length of time it takes to do something with or on a car. most shop hour charts could probably be found online for an idea to the job at hand. my understanding, with a good starting point for a base, is to expect 100hours minimum to return a car to a very clean, not a concourse, driver vehicle. so having this in mind, i assume there will be a few problems along the way, so i simply double it. so now i have a "rough' idea of a timeline, so how about the bucks. rates will vary on location, but most quality shops i find are in the 100.00 range.

keep in mind this is with a good car to start with and not a concourse resto. a rust bucket? well that is a can of worms!

It all comes down to you the owner, you have to ask yourself what you want from the car? As the E bodies become more harder to get/expensive, do you want a trailer queen, or able to enjoy a cruise with friends & local shows. Depending upon how much rust is in the car, this will have to be fixed before it rusts away. The rest you decide.

Are you saying to paint or to restore? I'm thinking paint since 2 and a half man weeks would be awful low for a restoration.

My 70 Cuda restoration was started in 2000 in my 2 car garage and not finished till 2005 so it took 5 years to restore. I did most of the work myself with having machine work done on the engine and short block assembly done at the machine shop. I primed, blocked and sanded the car 3 times and test fitted the front end from the doors forward 6 times before I was happy with the fit. I painted the inside and bottom with acrylic urethane paint. I put the rear end, K-member and all components back on the Cuda myself after I painted them. I made a make shift paint booth in my new 24X30 garage built in 2004 and based the Cuda at home letting it set for 2 weeks. I then blocked the base with 1000 grit sand paper to make sure no dings were missed after setting around for 5 years. I rented a paint booth at a local body shop for a weekend and put 2 more coats of base and then 3 heavy coats of ppg global clear on the outside. The $200.00 for the shop was well worth it and I will never do a complete paint job in a 2 car garage again. I bought many new parts and tried to use over what was in good shape with out cutting corners. I put the whole car back together in my garage including all the glass. I thought I could restore the Cuda for around $14,000 by doing all the work myself but I went over my figure by $8,000 dollars after I added up all my receipts. I know around here shop rates are $45.00 to $100.00 range and a couple a people I know just had cars restored and one has $55,000 in his 383 70 superbee and the other a 69 six pack superbee has $100,000 in his car but it looks concours quality and he drives it on the street. I would try and do as much work as you can yourself to save on the price of the restoration and shop around for the best deal on parts as prices vary from supliers. I bought items from all over the country just to save money and it saved me a whole lot. I have to many man hours in my Cuda to keep track but it takes many to do a complete restoration from top to bottom.

Well my husband kenny says there are some charts out there about resto's he said on average to take a car that is not rusty apart and and repaint fix couple of dents and such and put back together is on average about 350hours.For a rust bucket go 500-1000 hours this is on average. Some sites suggest this but you never know how long each car will take every car is different.Never know what you will run into when you get it apart and stripped.

Below is a link to my most recent restoration. It's a 70 440 6 pack cuda clone. I did all of the work myself (except for the paint a friend painted the car for me) with the help of my Dad and brother. The restoration took 7 months start to finish and I was only able to work on the car every other weekend and for two weeks during the Christmas holiday. My total cost (including $9000 purchase price of the car) was right at $30,000.
I'll have to look for the thread on my 71 cuda restoration but I had a grand total of $23,000 in that one (including $5,000 purchase price). The 72 Challenger in my avatar I currently have about $10,000 invested in it. The two cudas were nicer than just drivers, but were not trailer queens by any means. The Challenger I use as my daily driver.

Are you saying to paint or to restore? I'm thinking paint since 2 and a half man weeks would be awful low for a restoration.

so then my ?? is whats a restore?  It's a given if you start with a solid base you limit your cost. maybe a repaint would do. maybe a few nos parts will help, but if your starting with a can of worms, well u r fishing my friend. I could give you my house, wife and kids and it probably still wouldn't be enough. but whats a restoration? everyones ideas on how to do something or how it should be done vary greatly. It all comes done to putting the $$$ on the line with the shop. how much you wanna spend? if you have unlimited finances this thread is redundant. if your like the rest of us we pay attention to the $$$. hope this makes sense.

ps I did say I doubled the estimated time from 100 to 200hrs

Also keep in mind the little things.. I redid NIKKI'S trunk floor last winter.. and it wasn't bad to start with.. by the time I was done .. had to be well 2k .. granted I paid my buddy to do the paint work. I didn't tally the paperwork cause Iwanted to get it done. Now I'm working the area of the back seat. It (floor) only needed to weld in one small patch. Granted we cut my new stainless fuel line (from the trunk job) :banghead: Some of you may remember my post on that. But then I decide to sound dead the floor, then get the seat belts restored, might as well throw down some por15 wile its all apart, get the seat back straightend, I could go on and on and on. One thing leads to the next. I'm sure this will be another grand betime I'm done!  :grinyes:    This is a disease I tell you, an addiction, fortunately my wife has a litttle of the disease herself!
