     All in all the price to do a restore is based on what you think the car would be worth (to you) when completed. (mine is about six figures but she's speciel. :roflsmiley:)

     Being practical though, the base vehicle really should be considered. Don't sink a lot of money into a lesser car unless you plan to keep it for your own. I will never sell mine so spending extra money on upgrades don't bother me.

     Generally speaking, pay for the VIN & fender tag, and insert dollars accordingly. That should yield the optimum return. IMO  :blah:

    I had one quote of 100 hrs to paint my car starting from a bare shell and 2 others at 200 hours (1 included including blasting the car). Shops 2 and 3 I trust. I thought I had shop 1 lined up but they stopped returning my calls. I agree that everyone's definition of "restoration" is different. I think that cudagirl's estimates are the most realistic as far as time is concerned for a "restoration".

    Just for reference here are the numbers I'm looking at to paint my car (again I'm in central California so the labor prices are pretty high) not including any rust repair and no under body painting/rotisseire.

    Disassemble car myself: $0, just years of my life  :)
    1 1/2 gallons paint, 1 gallon clear, associated primers, reducers hardeners etc. $2400.00 (PPG DBU Deltron color/clear)
    1 gallon epoxy primer 2 quarts activator $200.00
    AAR Stripe Stencils $125.00
    Misc stuff like weather seals, body gaskets, body plugs etc. $500.00
    Blast bare shell and prime with PPG DP epoxy I supplied $1350.00
    Shop labor estimate 1: 200 hours @$50/hr = 10,000 (using my paint)
    Shop labor estimate 2: 200 hours @100/hr = 20,000
    Shop labor estimate 3: 100 hours @78/hr = 7,800 (using my paint, also prepped me that it might be closer to 10k out the door)
    Shop 1 total $14575
    Shop 2 total $24575
    Shop 3 total $12375 figure it will actually be the same total as shop 1.

    eek, that's the first time I've added this up.

I did everything on this car except the fancy paint stuff and I drive it...and I can't seem to stop messing with it....

    alot has to do with  how much you want to spend ... i was gonna buy moldings for my 71 challenge rbut my dad said why are you gonna spend 200 bucks on moldings if its gonna be a driver ... and what if someone steals the moldings....

    another question ofcourse is ... will it be a daily driver? weekend driver? or show car ?

    Steal your moldings? you must live in a tough town.

     I have restored cars of different makes in the last few years, like has been said restored means different things to different people but to me it means as nice and original as I can get it before it's too nice to drive. I think where you're at is a major factor too, I can get work done for far less in eastern Oregon than it would cost in southern California. by doing everything but the final paint and some special stuff like decal installation and seat recovering that I farm out I figure I could do a car like an E body for 20-25K if I start with a rust free car that's mostly there.

    I am looking at my estimate (dated this past SEP) for my 71 Challenger vert from a respected shop in the midwest.  Here are a few of the quotes:

    Bodywook:
    Replace floor panels:  Parts $700 Labor $2,000
    Replace 1 quarter panel: Parts $325  Labor $1,367
    Repair rust in windshield frame: Labor $480
    Repair rust holes in door frame:  Labor $240
    Repair rust in fender: Labor $320

    Putting the car back together gets expensive as well: to put on the aftermarket body sections like a hood or valance will get you an estimate of $120 each.

    Painting
    Setup and measure $320
    Etch, prime seal: $480
    Mask and apply primer: $720
    Block and sand:  $1360
    Clean and mask for paint: $480
    Apply paint: Paint $1,100 Labor $2,380
    Color, sand, buff: $800
    Paint jams, underside of hood, trunk, engine comp: $2640
    Rust inhibitor on undercarraige and interior: $1700

    I never made it past the body into engine, suspension, interior, electrical, etc.  The cost was getting out of control and I wasn't asking for a #1 car.  I will probably let them do the major body work like the quarters and the convertible top assembly, but after that, I am going to have to pay for shipping again to get it to someone else for paint and partial reassembly.  Or they will have to come down in price a bit.  Supply and Demand; it's considered a law for good reason.

    Those prices aren't out of line at all, and those prices would not give you a #1 show car. There would be a lot more expense to get the body perfect for that.

    Out of curiosity, at one point I asked shop #2 from my post what it would cost to restore a good car. I was told that if you were starting with a "nice", "complete" car, $125k. Rust repair would be additional.

    Wow u guys need to contact my husband you all paying alot he is doing alot of that same work for alot  alot less WOW.Anyone interested in having their car done send me a PM and you can talk to my husband directly on the phone.He is going to have some opening in feb or march he only takes two cars at a time for full resto.So nned to make a appt if interested and he and you can talk.

    Wow, you guys really know your stuff, I have learned a lot from this post, this is so educational.
    O.k. if I understand this right we have different stages or levels of what is considered a restoration, or in other words a restoration is not just a restoration.
    Correct me if am wrong, we have in order:

    1. Refurbishment
    2. Basic Restoration
    3. Rotisserie Restoration
    4. Concourse Restoration (the highest achievable restoration, the climax of all restorations  :worshippy)

    So why can't I sell my 73 Cuda project for 18k? It has had the body stripped, blasted, completely restored, and painted. Paint alone cost $1300 and it is so deep you can count the roof rafters of my garage in the reflection (Not even buffed yet). New roof, quarters, floor pans, trunk w/extensions.  Real BS 340 4-speed car. All numbers matching.

    People act like I'm crazy. Appearantly they've never paid to have one done.

    BTW, I hope that I never see any more comments like the one on the first page.

    Well a car sometimes is only worth as much as it is to the right person.If your car was a 70-71 no problem getting that money.It costs pretty much the same to restore a car labor is the same and the parts are not to far apart but it the end it depends on the car.72-74 cuda's and challenger's take just as much work but they are not as desireable.Just the way it is unfortunatly.
