I know I would do it for a lot less and you would still get a really good job on the paint job for sure.  It would be hard to give a figure out how much it would cost but the way you exsplain it does not sound as if it would take 500 hours to do.

First off in my opinion no one is worth 50 bucks an hour to do body work.  Just me.  Sorry.  And that would be alot of materials to use on a car also.  I would never ever have you do work on my car sorry again.  Just for your info the first time the economy went south because the coal mines closed and my customers moved out of the area.  And the 2nd was because of the economy again and the big 3 cutting back and I lost my good job because of that.

no offense taken .the last car i had done for me used 3.0 gallons of color complete car .5 gallons left for future damage control  each gallon was 260.00 per gallon three gallons of clear 160.00 each .three gallons prime and seal 320.00 = 1580 in all fairness thats a total car the cost would be less on a driver by one third the cost . :)

I guess I am not used to paying near that much for paint, The last time I bought some of that it was never that high for a gallon.

$50 is a pretty fair price.  Others on here have talked about shops charging up $100/hr.  Like Hebe said, he's talking about a shop that needs to make money to stay in business.  You're not just paying for the person to do the work.  There are other expenses that are being covered as part of that rate.  You've got insurance, taxes, parts, material, rent, etc.  I've run my own business for the past 9 years (not auto related), and you don't realize just what all goes into making payroll, etc, until you've had a hand in that.  Not to get off topic, but that's why the Big 3 are in such trouble.  They're paying the average guy on the line $25/hr (+/-), but it's really $65/hr because of all the other stuff involved that are not directly attributed to that particular employee.  If you can find a shop with a rate under $50/hr that is not just a side venture, then have at it.  By the way, I'm talking about a seasoned expert, not just an apprentice doing the dirty work for the owner.

By the way, what do you see as a fair rate that will keep you in business?  Keep in mind that the lower rate you charge, the more cars you have to do to keep your head above water.

What type paint do you normally buy?  I just paid something over $1,000 last year for Hemi Orange, Base/Clear.  Not cheap but well in line with what I had expected.

I have worked in more dealers and shops and I know exactly how it works and I have been the manager also and know how it works from that end.  I just will not pay that much money to anyone to do my car.  I am very picky with what happens to my cars for sure and I am very careful with them and do them right.

I have used several types of paint for my cars in the past.  I hope that the paint for my car is not near that high.

I bought 1.5 gallons of bc/cc  for my car right where you are at Gordon and it was around 550 bucks. Then I gave the guy 400 cash and 2 69 super bee ram charger hoods complete to do my car.  Paint is expensive.  It would of been more for paint, but my car has factory undercoating and the trunk and underhood was already the same color. I am doing my car again maybe this winter with more block sanding to, and heavier and complete on the m46 code paint. I'm figuring around 800 in paint this time.  I still feel that I am getting off cheap as prices have went up.  Some brands are a lot more in cost

My M46 Barracuda made it through 2 bankruptcies and 3 ex wifes.  I am going to do my car myself one way or another and hope to start on doing some things next week and maybe get it from where it is at this weekend or early next week anyways.  I hope to get into the restoration business in the next year or two if I can get the garage I want built.  I want a paint booth and all if I can swing it.  And I will not want to charge an arm and a leg to do them.
Hey Gordon :bananasmi lucky you are a single guy again to be able to do what you want without worrying if you are going overboard on the car buddy, and having someone telling you what you can and can not do..... should be smooth sailing for you now old mate, just concentrate on the M46 and it will turn out great.  Women would be right out of your mind for a while i would guess..............

For the record, paint materials are very expensive, i have noticed that your prices in America are on par to what we pay for quality paint here in Australia as well.  The old saying, "you get what you pay for" this goes for paint quality and work quality.

I do not touch a car here for under $50 per hour, just the way it is...... i worked in a custom/hotrod shop as a contractor, and they charged me out at $110 per hour.  I look after my clientel and they have no quarms in paying $50 per hour plus materials, just how it is. :dunno: :2thumbs:

Well to restore a car with alot of metal work and complete resto with parts new engine etc can run between 25-50k usually. Now kenny charges $40 a hour to the two guys in his garage at the moment  and he is doing two cars right now and the one is almost ready for block sanding  no parts included but welded rear 1/4's ,front floors, trunk pans, frame work 7 spots ,4 patches in doors and 2 on hood and fix the rockers in and out and also rear wheel housing and complete front windshield channel and both bottoms of front fenders replaced with new patch panels and  some other stuff and all the body work done and the guy has about 13k in it before blocking.Kenny says that is cheap for all that work. And that included taking the whole car apart and also glass beading alot of parts and taking motor and trans out and changing the rear.He doesnt have any overhead so he doesnt need to charge alot and he is in demand people wanting to get into the shop due to he is cheaper then alot of people. He says to do a car right takes year to year anda half due to he dont work on them everyday. Now after car is done it is being done as a nice high quailty driver not a show car but good for local car shows and cruises. If you want the car on the rotisserie then expect some more money if your looking to paint floors same color and car instead of undercoating alot more work to paint the floor pans. Also time and effort to put car up on the rotisserie.

Now alot of materials are getting expesive and kenny says he get stuff from www.autobodytoolmart.com   they are much cheaper for the same products then the local paint store.

He just painted my tailpanel on my cuda due to had some damage and just in materials he spent the following...All this is PPG stuff
all Quarts

k36primer,black paint, flat clear, reducer, hardner, catalyst, multi prep, and he used some sandpaper and extreme putty and also welded  in some new metal. Now in supplies he spent 365.00 and that included buying plastic and paper to cover car from getting anything on it.Now he spent about 20 hours doing all the work. Now if i was paying for it it would of ran me about 1000.00 for just the tail panel to be done and that is only  that part imagine a whole car.It is now cheap to restore a car you can buy one done for less most of the time but atleast you know what you have when your done.$40 a hour is fair to charge in his opinion alot of shops around here charge 55-85 a hour and depends on the rep of the shop. But again i will say that to restore a no rusty car and dissasemble and reassemble painted it is around 350-500 hours cars that are rusty are more then likely twice as many if not more hours. There are resto charts out there people go off of and if you find one you will see what i am saying is about right. One of the main problems is you dont know what it will take until you get into it and sand it to bare metal. My panel had a crack and when he sanded down found rot from the gas leaking on it when i put fuel in my cuda.We all know the gas will drip on that shelf area and eats away the paint if not cleared that is why he flat cleared it this time and i went with semi gloss for a much nicer look i will post pics when i can car in garage and it is raining out right now.

:iagree: Very well stated, Michelle.  It's great that your husband can do the work on the side with no overhead for a really good price, but as you said for the other local shops, they have to charge a lot more.  I think you put a lot of the stuff covered before into perspective.

I just got back from picking up some more supplies from the paint store.  I striped my car down last summer to repaint it but due to some problems was not able to get it done then. The quote I got for their top of the line PPG bc/cc was about $650.00 for a gallon of base and clear/hardeners ect. Today the price  has gone up to $795.00 for the same stuff.  Things are not getting any cheaper.
