I must have hit the wrong key, OOOOOPS...........................
I'm real new to some of this stuff, I'd like to get new oil in my tranny, is there a difference between draining the transmission and flushing the transmission?
I have no idea what to do with this thing, every time I drive past a transmission shop I get a nasty feeling, I've got this thing about tranny shops. For some reason they all seem like scammers to me, I know I'm nuts, but I really want to do this work myself. It seems to me it should be a piece of cake.
Is there a transmission fluid that is better for the 904?

Once again, THANK YOU for any assistance!!!

It's SOOOO funny that you mention the dentist, at the ripe age of 50, I'm just now starting to get over my fear of the dentist. I sweat like a pig when I get a simple filling!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yer so funny   I want to tell you how simple it is to change the filter and gasket, and to look at the front of the torque converter for a small bolt in the front of it for a drain, but tact will also tell you about maybe doing some simple band adjustments and maybe other stuff.

But go get a filter and gasket for your 904, get the car up on jack stands and make sure you are secure from the car falling on you. Have a big drain pan ready, look at everything around the trans for leaks like selector seal, rear tail shaft seal, tranny lines , dip stick , get a good visual of any place that has been seeping.

I usually start by undoing the 1/2" bolt heads from the back. So when everything is loose the front bolts let the pan tip to the black, allowing to control the trans fluid to some degree .  The filter will have 3 screws holding it on in a SPECIFIC way. It only goes on one way to be correct. Clean the pan, replace the filter, after tact gives you some pointers. It will take close to 5 qts to refill it up if you didnt drain the converter.

When checking the fluid, the car needs to be running and in neutral. Always put the car in drive before reverse. I have left some stuff out but just got you getting a dable of what to expect. It will be easy

I use no silocone and dont over tighten the gasket, it will leak

SWEEEEEEET! ! !

You guys have helped to create the '' Question Monster ''. It's like welfare, once you get a guy on it, he wants it forever...............

My next questions will be about the '' CLANK '' in my 8 1/4'' rear end. We put the old girl up on my buddies lift, he says the slop in the rear end is typical for a 1970 car with 93,00 mile. He says the rear gears are for the Pro's ONLY.............. He's never been on this site...............................
It looks like Year One sells a rear gear set for about $45, how hard is it for a rookie to properly install rear gears?

Tactransman,
I read the info on the ''Poor Mans Flush'', this is very cool. But I've got a few questions. This sounds like a three man operation. One to carefully pour fluid into the fill as the car is started. A second to start the car and shut it off at just the right moment.  I picture fluid coming out at warp speed, gushing like crazy. And a third to hang out under the car to see when the fluid comes out clean, so he can give the command to kill the engine.
Is this right or am I over thinking this. I want to be SURE I get this RIGHT!

Again, THANK YOU! ! !

No,one man can do it,two guys is easier.

The fluid pumps out the size of the cooler line but not crazy pressure.

If you have to,

put 4 qts in,

start it up,

when it starts running out of fluid,

turn it off,

put four more qts in,

start it up,

when it runs out again,

turn it off,

put the cooler line back on tight, start it up and top it off.

Make sure this is all done in neutral.

I got the gasket and filter last night. They didn't have gallon jugs, so I still need that.
I'll set up a team of three, my Wife will pour fluid (pray for me on that part), my 13 year old son will be the engine on/off guy. I'll be the guy under the car barking instructions.

Just a few more questions, I '' ASSUME '' the engine/tranny should be hot for this????
The guys at the parts store sold me some  '  Gasket  Shellac  ', they said that's the stuff to use to hold the gasket to the tranny pan, is this the way to go?

Just be careful, emergency brake on,block the wheels all that good stuff.

I wouldn't put anything on the gasket.
Trans does not need to be "hot"
