Dying Interior Parts - Anyone with experience?
« on: October 24, 2008 - 09:51:17 AM »
Hi All,

Okay this time I won't dance around the bush.

I found a Viper that I like - lots of upgrades (yeah I wanted stock but these are mostly brake and exhaust upgrades - stuff Viper's actually really benefit with) and it's good mileage, 2000 model year, etc etc etc...  The only thing I hate about it is the "Cognac" interior - tan.  Ugly tan.

The tan starts at the middle of the dash - so the guages and such are black.  All of the tan parts are fabric - either leather or carpet/cloth.  So I could go out and buy black parts from say a wrecked Viper, or I could dye it all.

I'm wondering if anyone has experience with dying parts.  I know this can be do-it-yourself work with store-bought products, or can probably also go to an upholstery shop.  My BIGGEST concern is color bleed.  I want black, and the last thing I want to do is wear a white shirt on a hot day in my black dyed interior and get out of the car with a huge black spot in my back 'cause I was sweating or what-not.

Can anyone shout in and tell me what to expect?

The price on this car is perfect and I don't want to miss out because of something I can possibly remedy myself for relatively cheap...

I think not only will you have a color bleeding problem but I think you will have a issue with the dye coming off and the tan showing through. Your best bet would be to replace the interior parts. There is a wrecking yard in Arizona that only deals with Viper's. I'm sure they would have all of the interior parts you need and may even do a trade out with the tan parts. I'll see if I can find the wrecking yard info.

Thanks for the link.  Most of their stuff is Gen III - 03 and newer.  But I did some more searching and found things like seat covers - actual leather OEM seat covers replacements, not autozone stuff - for good pricing.  The knee-panels under the dash are Cognac (that is just such an ugly color...) but I could dye those - there won't be much contact there.  But the whole center console, carpet, gear-shift and emergency-brake boots would have to be replaced.  I think the door inserts are cognac too...

Probably still less than, say, $5000...  in fact probably more around $2,000 if I shop carefully and look for salvage parts.

This Viper is pretty sweet - LOTS of goodies without going forced-induction and such.

I used SEM dye on the cloth seats in my Challenger. It doesn't rub off on my clothing at all.

He wants wire-transfer of funds within 3 days.  I told him I can't do it but I have a certified bankers check.  We swapped info and he said he'll call me if it doesn't sell.  He has good feedback and it appears some auto-related selling in the past, so I think I can trust him.  I'm just not going to go wire transferring money until I can see the car, and I can't get ANYTHING done in the next three days...

Viper parts aren't the cheapest and he probably paid to have it all installed.

I'm watching it like a hawk, Al.  I haven't bid on it because he wants payment within 3 days.  I can't possibly do it - no way.  I CAN get over there next Saturday and look at it - yes he's only 8 hours from me (no idea how I'd actually get there - possibly rent a car one-way I guess) but where there's a will...

HOWEVER, I've already contacted him to see if he'll grant an extension - I can wire him the money on the spot while I'm inspecting the car next weekend - just call my bank and have it sent - costs me like $14 bucks.  But I have to see it first.

The thing looks incredible - look at that paint.  Tinted windows - very nice.  The undercarriage looks like it hasn't even rolled out of a showroom yet.  Who knows how old the pictures are, but that's what an in-person inspection is for!

If he is willing to work with me, I'll bid on it tonight.  Just sitting here, waiting.  :)

Jeff

NM - Bus ticket from Greyhound is only 68 bucks, tops.

And yeah, Viper parts are EXPENSIVE - it's just the name.  I've found that already in my searching.  They figure, you're bolting this stuff on a Viper, you can afford the big bucks.  The sh!t ain't worth that much.  But hey, if I can get a car with that stuff already on there at a good price, why not, ya know?
