Vehicle Order Number in the Fender Tag
« on: October 24, 2008 - 06:40:50 PM »
Hi

Does somebody know is the Vehicle Order Number in a Mopar Fender Tag a dealer related number or is it a "floating" number related to the dealer's order?

So what's the secret behind this 6 digit number series, what it's telling?

The 6 digit number is the sequence build number, in other words it indicates the production number (Of all vehicles built) for that year.  As for the fender tag, I don't believe there is any dealer info on that.

He is talking about the VON not the last six numbers of the VIN I believe?

Some VONs do have a meaning - if it starts with a letter.

Dealerships were sent blank order pads, the VON was in the upper left hand corner of each page. I have not figured out how may pages were in each pad yet, but it was at least 25. The VON number on the order sheet was used to track the car inside the assembly plant, & for transport to its final dealership destination.

In some cases, where the VONs track a dealership can be determined if other cars known to be from the same dealership have been recorded. It is a rare thing though, because most folks do not have the original dealership data for their cars. For some dealerships that I have seen the records for, I can recognize the dealership the car went to based on the VON.

If the order for the car was "in house", like a sales bank car the VONs are fairly random.

Thanks again Barry,

Yes I was meaning the VON.

So it looks like that in theory there can be a few cars with the same VON as it was only a 6 digit series?

Is it so that the dealer number for instance on the Warranty Booklet has nothing to do with the order number?

The VON incudes the SPD - Scheduled Production Date, so it is acutally 9 digits.

The last six numbers of the VON can repeat, but NOT on the SAME model in the SAME model year.

As an example, a Duster may exist with a VON of M02345, an AAR Cuda may have the same number since they are seperate models.

Another example. If I see two 1970 Challengers with the same last six digits of the VON, I know one of them is a fake. Usually fender tags where folks guess at the VON have other red flags as well though.

The five digit code on an original warranty or window sticker is the dealership's account ID number. It has no correlation to anything else at all.

Here is an example of a VON with the letter "W";

It is W00999.

The "W" does have a meaning, it took me about 5 years to figure it out. Any guesses?

And if the original documentation is lost, then it's like a guess of one of a million that you have guessed the VON right.

Has The Walter P. Chrysler Museum some build records of these cars?

Would that be a month?
Maybe the beginning number of a state?

It's not meaning the month because that information is in the SPD, but Barry don't keep us waiting for the next five year's for the correct answer

Yep, not a month or a state. We have some bright folks here, lets see if anyone can guess it.

One way or the other I will not make anyone wait five years for the anwer, I would run out of "nopes".  ;)

Has The Walter P. Chrysler Museum some build records of these cars?

People "guessing" at VONs make their fake tags much easier to spot. (at least for me)  ;)

Chrysler only has records on 1967 & earlier cars.

Me too.

I have had some pretty serious "offers" to turn to the dark side. My integrity is not for sale.

Now, back to the "W", no other guesses?  :dunno:

If we get W out of the way we can move on to "D", "J" & "Q".  ;)

Barry:   Just a guess -- do these letters stand for such things as:   (a)  Made for Inventory  (b) Special Order   (c) Fleet    ??
