Barracudas Die in Fire - Medina, Ohio!!!
« on: October 28, 2008 - 02:42:02 PM »
From WKYC.com, Cleveland Ohio:
_______________________________________

SHARON Twp -- Store With Us went up in flames Monday afternoon.

The storage condos, located at 1096 Medina Road in Medina County, contained boats, RVs and antique cars. A reported 30 units went up in the fire.

Janet Hill owned two of the storage condos.

"We had a motorhome, my first brand new car, a Barracuda that was restored," she said, "a 74 Barracuda, a[n] Acura and all of our corporate business records."

It was a four alarm fire that brought 12 local fire departments to the scene. The fire is under control and firefighters are still at the scene hitting hot spots.

The damage looks to be a total loss as the entire inside of the building collapsed.

There is no word yet as to what caused the fire and the amount of damaged caused.

Bill Maulding rushed over to check out his condo. He has a personalized unit with a loft. He's had it since 1995.

His unit was untouched by the fire but he said, "I feel bad. It will be tough to pick through it, keep what you want to keep."

While the material loss is devastating for some of the owners, Hill said, "Our memories went up in smoke.

"No people, no animals, that aspect is good -- just a lot of memories."

Weirdest part of this all?  This is where my wife and I met up with my parents to attend the big PSU/OSU party.  Creepy.

Sad, sad 'Cuda... :walkaway:

Aw man, the second article is worse...

From the Cleveland Metro Newspaper:
______________________________________
SHARON TOWNSHIP -- A Monday morning fire gutted a Medina County storage facility 18 loaded with exotic sports cars, boats and other valuables, causing an estimated $6 million in damages.

The blaze in Storage World Building E on Medina Road broke out about 11:30 a.m. and engulfed about 32 units before firefighters brought it under control an hour-and-a-half later. Ballooning black smoke could be seen and smelled for miles.

No one was injured and the cause of the fire is under investigation. Sharon Township Fire Chief Robert Haas said the fire, which was reported by an emergency call, started in a middle unit with an open garage door. He said he didn't know what was inside.

Each 20-by-40-foot storage garage cost about $35,000 and are individually owned, with the common areas maintained by a condominium association. Owners stock the units with luxury RVs, collector cars, motorcycles, boats and other valuables.

Stored items consumed by the flames account for nearly $5 million of the estimated losses, Haas said.

The fire destroyed a 2002 motor home, 1973 Plymouth Barracuda, 1974 Plymouth 'Cuda and an Acura TSX owned by Bob and Janet Hill of Bath. It took files of their business records, photos of their muscle cars and boxes of trophies from car shows.

Next door to their unit, two Porsches burned.

"There's a lot of history inside these buildings," said Edwin Jones of Bath Township, who came to watch the fire, hoping it wouldn't jump to his storage building.

The facility has insurance, said Tom Clarkson, treasurer of the condominium association and a Storage World unit owner for 18 years. He said he couldn't remember another fire at the facility. Building E was built in 1998, according to county records.

No, but the abandoned hotel that was across the street from our hotel, that had a few cars in the parking lot and the fire alarm going off for an hour with no emergency vehicles arriving was cause for some alarm.  Can anyone say, "Meth lab?"

What happens in that type of situation? Does insurance just give you the money to buy another cuda? Do they cover the total cost of another one? I know it sucks to lose the original since it has a lot of sentimental value.

It depends how much you had the car insured for??  Hopefully they had an appraisal forthe cars and then they were fully insured.   :dunno:

It all depends on what your policy says. Some companies have agreed value and some go by appraisals. If it was Hagerty they would have an agreed value and no deductable. They would then pay whatever the agreed value was.
