Where to put the speedometer? A-pillar?
« on: November 01, 2008 - 11:29:13 PM »
My Cuda has a non-rallye dash. Previous owner loaded it with aftermarket gauges, including a big tach in the speedo opening.

It looks really cool, but I need a speedometer.

Dakota Digital makes a nice 2 1/16 speedometer that will give mounting flexibility, but I'm not sure where to put it.

One thought is to mount it in the ashtray, or to mount it in a cup under the dash.

Another thought is to mount it on the A-pillar, but I don't believe anyone makes a pod for an E-body.

Read some posts in the archives about potentially modifying pods for another vehicle to fit, but I haven't seen any success stories.

Anybody got any pictures of A-pillar mounted gauges in an E-body?

Another option is to build you own dash.  Not sure what you're going for, but there are a lot of threads about fabbing a dash.

Here's mine (unfortunately hard to get a good pic of black, black and black without daylight)

Maybe you could take the tach out of the dash, replace with a speedo and mount the tach somewhere else??

you can get smaller tachs that might fit the A-pillar, I don't think anyone makes a speedo (analog style anyway) smaller than about 3 3/8

I don't want to build a new IP. I don't want to move the tach. I want to use what I've got. I like it. I just want to add a speedometer.

I'm looking for options to mount the speed in an alternate location.

Before putting a speedo on the a-pillar, have you considered just running a GPS/Garmin/etc that sticks on the glass and just get your MPH from that?

my tach is elsewhere

Hey Goody, where did you get the speedo cable for your Auto Meter speedo? I've got the same speedo and haven't figured out what cable to use yet.

Sorry, no.  The gauge package I went with doesn't have a Vacuum Only gauge, so I'm stuck with dual range (Hg/PSI) for the time being.

how about finding a small digital speedometer that you could mount in the corner of the dash?

I plan to run a 2 1/16 Dakota Digital unit. There are mounting cups out there that will work in various locations, but I want something a little slicker in appearance than a tacked on cup.

If you are familiar with fiberglass, you could likely mold your own a-pillars with gauge mounts. Or if you have a summit/jegs close by, take in a a-pillar and see if you can get a decent match with any autometer sells.

How about putting it in the far right hand gauge hole where the clock is on a non-ralleye dash. That's where I put my tach. No reason you couldn't put a speedo there of the size you are getting from dakota digital.

Here's what I'm working with now.

The tach is held in with a urethane adhesive. It's not going anywhere.
