Ramchargers Engine?
« on: November 02, 2008 - 10:01:15 AM »
I found a 440+6 Cuda on Autabuild that boasts of having a Ramchargers built engine.  I called the owner and asked about it but didn't really understand what he was saying.  Did a search on Ramchargers and found a bunch of information, which I am sure everyone but me knows about, concerning the team that started this name from around the 50s on up.  The guy that owns the car is a very interesting man that did a lot of music promoting back in the day, and dropped a lot of well known names that he discovered or worked with.

Can someone tell me about what it means to have a Ramchargers built engine, how is it different, etc?  The unit was date coded for '73, so it must have been an aftermarket built unit, for which it appears a chain of Ramchargers retail outlets existed during the last part of the last century.

I don't recall the Ramchargers ever having an outlet for their stuff, much less a national chain of them. The Ramchargers were a group of Chrysler engineers that loved high performance, and built awesome drag cars. They did build engines for others, but I was not aware of any kind of "special outlets" for them; they built for others when asked to, and did what their customers wanted. This would be very similar to the way that custom engine builds are handled today. Proving that an engine was built by the Ramchargers would be another problem entirely. Documentation is the only way to prove its provenance. Many engine builders sign their engines in some way; I put my initials on mine. Some kind of identifier that verifies that it was that particular engine which was built by them, along with an invoice or work order from their shop, would be a nice start. A letter of authenticity, signed by the guilty party, would also be helpful. Without some kind of documentation, it's just an engine.

Man you guys is smart.  I had no idea what the C stood for.  And that is the one on ebay.

I assumed more than I should have about the national chain -- one of the hundreds of post said that they had a place in Calif. and, I thought it said other locations, that closed their doors some years back, so I just assumed they had retail outlets.

It's a minefield out there, isn't it?  I love this site!
