Clutch help
« on: November 03, 2008 - 08:56:48 PM »
Hey guys, need some assistance once again.  As some of you know I changed out my 318 3-speed with a 600 ft lb 512 stroker and a A-833 4 speed.  The engine runs great, only problem is my clutch won't handle the tourqe of the 512.  It seems to leave hard in 1st gear but when I shift into 2nd the clutch never seems to grab, it revs up and while I think the tires are slipping some I get plenty of clutch smell.  I bought a Zoom clutch kit (ZZZ-30027) from Summit & a 1 113-1014 Billet flywheel from 440 Source.  Give me your thoughts?

thanks
Mike

CP will most likely kick in here and tell you that you wasted money on that diaphram clutch. On his advice I bought the old tried and true, heavy pedal 3000LB race clutch through Mopar.

If the Zoom is a diaphragm type perhaps you could try a Centerforce Dual Friction disc.  Might be worth checking if these would work or if Zoom has an equivalent style disc.  They are rated for the higher torque applications.  Barring that then CP likes the McLeod Long style units IIRC.  You could check with McLeod for a specific recommendation.

The Centerforce Dual Friction disc works great when its working.  I've had a few of them.  I had trouble whith one, one of the weights would get stuck between the diaphram fingers and not let the clutch disengage.  I looked  up that Zoom # number and its not a diapham, but it is only a 10.5", you might want to bump up to an 11".

All of your systems needs re adjusting right now Drew, after the shifter is adjusted with the new bracket, you still need to re adjust the clutch linkage, it will need the adjuster nut unscrewed some more just a few turns.

You will never get mne to buy a diaphragm clutch of any make , C Force is smoke a mirrors advertising not quality , I have seen them last less than 3 days
I use the McLeod 3 Finger Borg & Beck or the B&B Long style with a performnce disc , if you have the 130 tooth flywheel use a 10.95" PP with an 11" disc , if you have the 143 tooth flywheel you can use either the 11" system or the 12" , McLeod also makes a street Twin system that will take 1100 ft lbs

Mine's not a diaphragm clutch.  Is it possible that it just needs adjusted?  I smell clutch just backing out of the garage.

You need to look up inside the bellhousing and see if your 3 release fingers are touching the pressure plate cover. If they are, your pressure plate is not releasing, which is not allowing full pressure on the disc. You will then have to adjust your finger height by turning the pivot nuts clockwise 1/4 to 1/2 a turn. If you go too much your clutch will not release when you push the clutch pedal in.    You only have to turn the nuts till you can see a gap between the fingers and the hat.   If you need a more detailed explanation, PM me.

With you smelling clutch, just backing out of the garage, tells me that your finger height is wrong.

If your clutch is not a diaphram then (dumb question) did you remember to remove those 3 little hard rubber blocks that are placed under the clutch fingers? They are factory installed to protect the fingers in shipping and must be removed when the clutch is installed.
