TC's Hemi Resto

I took my Hemi down to the machine shop today and dropped it off.  :wave:
 
The machinst, He couldn't believe whoever had built it what they did. Bored 60 over very unevenly done on a few cylinders, hyper utectic pistons instead of forged, no distributor bushing.
Heads look fine...so far.

He said now I look like I may need a special set of pistons made because of the innaccurate bore. We'll see once he digs further in on it.

The pistons are KB not Kieth Black. Never heard of KB before.  :dunno:
Block is getting hot tanked then magna fluxed for starters. After that, we sit down and do the game plan on what to do on it. 2 week lead time before they get to it. 40 engines back logged right now before they get to mine.

Carbs are getting sent out to Scott Harms this week.

I don`t know what to say , I see this All the time , we take apart engine with 50 miles on them that are screwed from bad assy & machining most of the engine I see I get called to fix After paying someone else to built it then I have to give them the bad news that the whole engine needs rebuilding yet again . I did one this spring I assumed was just a ring problem with a new engine using a lot of oil , nope 4 pistons were installed int he wrong holes , so 4 bent valves , the block was honed too large so we had to replace the block , the pistons were rocking in the bores , piston ring gaps were lined up too , wrong valve springs were instalkled on Indy heads damaging both the heads & reatiners , numerous problems all costly to fix ... luckily he had Only paid over $6000 for machining & assy , he had already purchased most of the parts

I know this isnt one of those common pratices but cant you just bore out the cylinders .065 and buy a better set of pistons?  I know this is the most economic opition but might be AN opition.

Keep us posted TC, could be worse I guess, at least it's getting the proper treatment now. I agree, I have always thought KB = Keith Black. Dad's strip down oin the 340 worked out to be one hell of an engine, we were lucky, so many aren't. How far can you bore a 426? Like when does the wall thickness/safety become an issue?

Then what the heck does KB stand for?  :eek7:  Are they trying to get people to ASSUME that they are Keith Black made? (which seems to have worked!)  :dunno:

I am not sure what is going on, as i have seen the sil-o-lite logo on Keith Black piston boxes, sure of it.  And everywhere you look on e-bay the KB logo is affiliated with Keith Black........... may need more investigation, or someone in America local could ring and get the low down straight from the horses mouth, so to speak :2thumbs:

I suspect Kieth Black Inc. outsourced the production of the pistons to a previous no name company; then threw some $ at them with a name change added on.

I think Keith Black designed the pistons and Silv-o-lite manufactures them. Silvolite has been around a long long long time (since the 20's maybe?) and are hardly a no-name company.
70 Cuda, 7.0L Gen-III Hemi, Viper T56 w/9310 gearset, 3.91's, Megasquirt MS3x v3.57, Innovate wideband, Firm Feel upper arms, torsion bars, springs and strut rods, QA1 DA shocks. I did everything on this car except the fancy paint stuff and I drive it...and I can't seem to stop messing with it....
