Rear end prep/paint ideas???
« on: November 04, 2008 - 06:35:38 PM »
Just been cleaning up/grinding my Dana so I can put her back into place before I am able to weld up any of the rear panels that I need to.
Was just looking for any advice as to what you all have used for paint etc....
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated   :1zhelp:

Thanks

I just dissasembled my rearend and had it sandblasted and powdercoated. I wire wheeled the springs and used eastwoods rust encapsulator as a base coat and their xtreme chassis black as a top coat, and it looks great. Mine is an 8.3/4 so I also had the center section powdercoated, I think the whole deal was about $110.00

Yeah if you disassemble everything then powdercoating is a great way to go because they will sandblast it too.  If you want to do the work yourself, then you can clean it up with paint strip discs or scotch-brite discs and paint it.  I even cleaned up the various welding slag on mine to smooth it out.  After that I epoxy primed then painted with a cheap single stage black.  However, you could also use rattle can paint as well.  Anyway you can see some pics on page 12 of my thread:

When prepping my K-frame even after de-grease, pressure wash, & sand blast I still had grease buildup in crevices & inside. I used a air pressure wash implement that sips cleaner, I used mineral spirits, & blasts the gunk away.

I had the housing powdercoated and painted the pumpkin with Napa cast blast. The powdercoating is far tougher than rattle can finishes and as someone pointed out they sandblasted it first. The only thing I wish I had done first was ground some of the pitting down because it shows through the powdercoating.

Sounds like powdercoating might be the way to go.

save yourself countless hours of grinding, sanding, cleaning, take it to powdercoating place, they will blast all the crud off and powdercoat it , I know my guy here can do it within 1 day

mine was extremely easy to do with a hand drill and gold wire brush attachments.... painted it semi gloss black.... took me about 2 hours to do the whole job... paint n all.... the hand drill with the gold wire brush attachment lowes sells make quik work of cleaning it up... mine was worse than yours to start with also ... I also used the drill / wire brush trick on the drums also.... easy and quick and looks as good as new and cost me all together about $20 bucks to do the whole job :2thumbs:

you can see the gold wire brush in one of the pics I posted on the work bench... I used that one and 2 others... a flat thin one and one not as wide to get into the tighter spots  :2thumbs:

Stroker's method saves more than $140 over what I paid for sandblasting and powdercoating. The only advantage powdercoating would give you is a little more durability.

A million thanks to each and every one of you for all your opinions/info/help/guidance  :worshippy  :2thumbs:

Well, I took a little bit from all of you, and you definitely convinced me of sandblasting.......even though I had already spent many hours grinding down already  :faint:
Stroker.........if you were able to do that to your with just those wire brush attachments, then yours was in MUCH better shape than mine..............believe me. Yours came out awesome though, and thanks for that link to yours too

I was inspired by you all to kind of build my own little enclosure, and I bought a great working hand held sand blaster off of my Snap on dealer that comes to the marina every week.
It still gets pretty messy, but it keeps a ton of the sand at bay.
Just got in a new rear polygraphite bushing kit/ new U-bolts too.
Also decided to go with and just got in from Eastwood some pre painting prep/ rust encapsulator/ and chasis satin black chip resistant paint. Never used any of it so hope it works good......that sh!t ain't cheap  >:(
REALLY appreciate all the help again everyone

 P.S.
Don't laugh at my white trash rig.........I never claimed to be a carpenter  :bricks1:  :lol2:
I'll let ya know how it comes out

there is nothing,no wire brush or grinder that can clean rusty old metal parts better than sandblasting,it gets in tights spots and gets all rust out,not like wire brush that smears and covers the rust, I'm glad you went that route, you'll be very happy with results
