I guess before I'd jump off this bridge I'd check with my Insurance co to see what happens if you dammage that sweet car. I'll bet they will have a clause about racing.  I know this will not be popular for some folks but my personal .02 is if you cannot afford to repair it stay home. You just got it so why the hurry to smash it? I guess I'm getting old as I would have never thought this way 30 years ago! :smilielol:
Read your insurance policy before calling someone to ask about racing, usually it is stated pretty clearly. Even collectors insurance policys have a no coverage for racing statement in there someplace.
I agree with others that an autocross or NASA style event would be ideal to get your feet wet.

Buy Gran Turismo 4 or 5 they really help teach the basics. In the first page of the manual it tell you how to race basically. It says to imagine there is a string between your brake pedal, gas pedal, and steering wheel with some slack in it. When you turn or push on the brakes or gas you take up some of the slack. When all the slack is gone you skid.

Jeff, I am by no means a pro at anything but running my mouth, but if it were me I would learn the fundmentals.... and then learn the fundmentals.  I would also lean the fundmentals, some of the basics and get some training.  I think you get the point.

That's fantastic.  WHERE?

I'm not looking to join Nascar.  :)  I'm trying to determine where I can go to basically get on a course and have fun racing - while of course learning, getting the basics, etc etc etc.

I've gotten good info so far - I've looked into the NASA and SCCA websites - NASA has a mid-atlantic region that includes Ohio, West Virginia and Virginia - all relatively nearby.  Looks like less than $300 for a weekend, and you get an instructor to go around with you until you're approved for solo-racing on each course.  Sounds perfect.  I'll probably have to wait until better weather next year - I won't have time to get ready by... ...this weekend, which is when the next scheduled event occurs.  The site basically says you need a safe car and a helmet.  It says they get everything from Kias to Lamborghinis.  My kinda place.  It's also more road-course oriented, not Autocross which I don't think would be a lot of fun in a Viper - as mentioned above.

I think I pretty much got my answer, which is cool.  Thanks.

:iagree: people I have met at an autocross or track event have been very friendly and eager to help out newbies. Might be cool to get a feel for what happens from the sidelines before jumping in.

To run with NASA, you will need to join first. This gets you membership  participation in any of the events your in your district or nationally. Secondly, you have to have you car inspected by a Nasa authorized center or wait for it to complete at the track the day of the event. Then it is simply signing up for the weekends you want at the venues available. Once you get signed off for the four levels of HPDE, then you decide if you want to move in to time trials or sanction competition. Depending on how often you hit the track with them, it could take all year to get to level four sign off.

Test and tune at any local drag strip can be done almost anytime a track is open.

My only question is, how much does it cost to attend the HPDE events?  I don't think racing should have to cost me a fortune (beyond, of course, buying the car!)  But it doesn't seem too bad from what I can tell.  The NASA site says that each track has different costs, and the season matters, too.  Joining NASA is only $44 bucks per year.

The NASA inspection is recommended to have done by an ASE tech, but I'll bet if I gave them a resume of my own automotive training, they'd probably allow ME to sign off the car - I've already read over the tech sheet - there's nothing there I can't inspect myself, and I could think of a half-dozen more things that should be inspected as well.

As far as the engine is concerned, these things are BUILT for racing.  The V10 platform is very reliable and simple - hell I think the 2008's will be more troublesome as they finally have variable-valve-timing.  The original V10's were very basic - these same engines were used for the ACR's with nothing more than air-inlet changes.  Those things are effectively street-legal race cars!

I think the engine will handle anything I ask of it.  :)  Now the tires will be another question.
