Need some guidance
« on: November 08, 2008 - 11:17:19 PM »
I'm seriously thinking of purchasing a 1970 Barracuda I found on craigslist. Only problem, the car was in a fire and is completely burned out. The body is still complete along with the front suspension, rear end, frame, front/rear bumper and a motor/transmission. It will need all floor pans, interior, glass, etc... The guy wants $1600 for it, but the price is negotiable. I'm thinking of offering him $500-800 for it. I realize this is not an overnight project. I have plenty of spare time but somewhat limited funds. I expect to invest no less than 10K in parts and accessories to bring this car back from the dead. My biggest problem, other than the $$, is that I'm a complete novice at restoring cars. I have a handfull of friends that I work with that have a ton of experience in car restoration. So, what I'm hoping for is that my friends will hold my hand thru the process of restoration to help cut down on the labor costs of having it done professionally.

I've attached some pics of the car in question.

My basic question is: after viewing the pics of the car, is this car going to be worth the time and effort to revive?? HELP!!

I am no bodywork or paint expert, but I thought that once a car burned up that the sheetmetal couldn't be restored.  There are some really good deals out there right now.  I would definatley keep looking if I were you.

That car is NOT for the novice restorer. I'm sure you can find something much better than that.

LOL

I've heard that... "Usually heat warps sheet metal so there will be a lot of high and low spots (ripples) on the individual panels. This won't really be apparent to an in-experienced person until the finish is sprayed on.  On a positive side, the steel in the body has been flame hardened, it will actually be harder than the original metal. This means it will be less likely to flex while it's being worked with.  But, this would be a lot of hours of work to bring back to a decent finish. Media blasting the entire body, would be only the first step on a very long journey." - quote from a friend

is this quote true or is my friend BSing me?

P.S. did I mention that I have limited funds ... ;)

There is a 74 Cuda on ebay now for $4000.  It's in very rough shape too but hasn't been burned up, has glass, an engine and more.  You are better off looking for something like that.  I think you will have to spend alot more cash restoring the body on the one someone used at a marshmellow roast.   :2cents:

Haha i saw that one...I only have about $1500 atm to buy with...

I also saw on craigslist a guy that has 2 1965 Barracuda's for $750. Only problem with that is, I'm not a fan of that bodystyle. :(

Maybe you should just spend the money you have now on a engine and rebuild it, then buy a car to put around it later.  You are going to need ALOT more than $1500.  I thought I would get away with spending only $20K.  WRONG!!  But, keep the dream alive, keep saving, and eventually the right deal will come along.

That would be alot of work. Maybe put some sand paprer on and block it and see how it clears to bare metal.

Also is there a vin tag or rebuildable motor/trans of value? Good luck.

In all reality what you would be looking at here by the pictures is someting that you would have to unpick every exterior piece of sheet metal and through it to the crapper.  When sheet is tempered this way it becomes unworkable to a degree.  You could use all the sub structure as long as the fire did not get hot enough to damage it because of its shape, but if you were to follow this path, i garauntee you would be looking at well over your quoter of $10,000 in just parts.  All the fidley little things add up, best advise would be to look for something that is more user friendly :2thumbs:
