Hey Guys!

I'm hoping that the trip out there will be pretty uneventful - well as uneventful as you can get.  There's lots for me to come home to so being safe is a top priority.

Ft. Dix is quite the place.  I was there 2 years ago and it has changed quite a bit since I was there last.  Looks like with the joint basing, the Air Force has started investing on improving the Ft Dix side and has a few buildings occupied on the Ft. Dix side of the fence.  We were in a quasi lock down most of the time we were there.  GO-1 (for those who are familiar with it) was in affect for us trainees.   None the less, we still had fin out there.

I've come to the conclusion that the bodywork is going nowhere and if this car is to ever get done, I'm going to have to have someone do the work for me.  As much as I'd love to do the work myself, I just don't have the time and I want to see progress.  I've had the car of about three years now and it's way behind where I was hoping it would be.  So, I'm going to have my buddy Jim at Area 52 Restorations here in Troy, IL finish the bodywork for me.  I've seen his work and he is great with bodies of cars.  He's going to put on all the sheetmetal that I've been playing with for the past few months on the rear of the car.  He's also going to take care of the three sections of the floor as well as the button up the firewall.  Lastly, he's going to paint the car.  This is alot of work that I was hoping that I was going to be able to do, but it looks like the work will be done elsewhere.  We're going to be bringing the car over to his place in the next week or two.  I hope to get it over there before I leave for Afghanistan later this month.  But if not, he can come and get the car when he is ready.

I'm kinda disappointed that the car hasn't come together quicker.  I'll be honest, over the past couple years, keeping the motivation going to work on the car has been really hit or miss.  Lots of things going on 'in life' have kept me from spending time with the Cuda.  I'd get a good momentum going and then something would come up which virtually slammed the brakes on progress.  These things were more important and I don't regret having to put the car aside to deal with other issues.  I guess I had my expectations set a little too high on how this project was going to come together.

I do know that the Cuda will be in good hands with Jim.  I've watched him do his thing on cars over the past 3 years or so and the guy is good!  He's going to be doing the work while I'm gone and I'm already anticipating what the car is going to look like when I get back!  Even without and interior and driveline, the Cuda is going to look GREAT!!!

Sean, I understand the no time & loosing momentum thing. Great that you have a friend like Jim, hope it goes smooth for you & the 'Cuda.

I didn't have the skills to do the body work myself so I let someone else do it. As long as you know what you're getting I think there is no less satisfaction with someone else doing it than if you did it yourself. You can use your resources to do the things you have control over more thoroughly and with better results than if you tried to do too much yourself.

Bodywork can get burnt doing it. Keeping determined and keep going at it is the hard part.

Out here labor is at least 70-90 dollars an hour. I think the average car is about 5-700 hours? That's what I read on a Moparts thread once. You pay the price either way. Doing it yourself and trying to make a living at the same time leaves not enough momentum. Or...send it out. They're at it 8 hours at a time. I know I probably saved at least 15-20 grand in labor.

Thanks for the comments guys!

I know that I'm going to be happy with the results with Jim.  He carries a lot of pride and is very anal about his work.  The price he quoted me is VERY reasonable, to the point where I feel a little guilty about how much he's undercharging.  He knows that his name is going to be carried with the car where ever it goes.

Going into this project, I've had minimal experience doing badywork.  I've done lots of research and am very appreciative of all the information and tips/techniques that have been shared here.  I think that I could have done a pretty good job myself plus I have some experienced folks in the area that have been helping me with what I've done so far.

I have a really good feeling about sending it off to get the work done.  Still would have loved to say that I did it (with help of course) but oh well.

Go with your gut! ,if you trust the guy to do the job right you will be happier at the justified expense and one step closer to burning rubber when you are done  :wavingflag:.

Sean,

I went through the same thing on mine.  I did all the sheetmetal work and started doing the body work and finally realized that at the rate I was going it was going to take me 3 years to finish.

One thing I found that helped me keep the motivation up was to do small things at a time that you can see through to completion.  So instead of staring at the whole car thinking I'm not getting anywhere if you do something like say clean up the floorboards you can step back and be proud and that helps you get motivated for the next thing.

It might sound goofy but the other thing that would help me get motivated is just cleaning up the garage.  At times the garage gets so cluttered with parts, tools, etc that you basically have to spend an hour digging out the car to even work on it.  So just cleaning up the garage so that I could go out there and just start working on it always helped motivated me.

Hey Guys & Gals!
Made it home!  The deployment went well and the family is glad to have me back.

Going to be taking the car over to my buddies house next week so he can start on the body work.
