Got the outer wheel well fitted up to the car! The first piece of sheetmetal to be fitted. It wasn’t easy though. Because the outer wheelwell is sandwiched between the inner wheelwell and the rear passenger wall. So, I cut the lip off the outer wheelwell.

I also brought out my Goodmark trunkpan and AMD braces to line them up and ran into another problem. The braces don’t sit snug against the trunk floor at the rear of the trunk. Argh!!! Will probably have to see what I can to to get these to work.

If anyone has any ideas on how to fix this, please post it here:  http://www.cuda-challenger.com/cc/index.php?topic=73186.0

If I recall when I did mine, the trunk braces were actually designed to go underneath the tail panel. If you left enough lip, you should be able to butt weld the brace to the cut off piece thats sticking out were you cut it at. That is, if you left enough.

Keep going.

The end of the braces are sandwiched between the trunkpan and crossrail.  All I have left on the back end of the car is the frame rails and the cross bar.  Tail panel is long gone!

Here's a little better pic showing the gaps I'm talking about...

Did you save your old metal parts to compare? Could be a little of each one being off.

Mike,
I just dug out the old braces and layed them on the trunkpan.  They fit pretty good.  They're just in pretty bad shape.  Will take some work to get them good enough to put on.  A buddy of mine has a small sandblaster, I may take them over to his place and throw some sand at them to see what I have.

Thats what I did, re used them after blasting. Threw on some Rust Bullet after. If you do a Rust Bullet or POR 15, make sure not to put near weld areas. Migs hate that stuff.

I think cleaning the old braces is the way to go.  They fit pretty good and then I can recoup (some) the costs of the new trunk braces.

Sean,

Now you're getting warmed up, its time to start using the good stuff. This mig welding wire is ideally suited for mig welding sheet metal on cars.

Use the locator on the website to find a distributor in your area.

Thanks for the link Mike, but I don't think I'll need it.  I don't have a welder...

I'm built my rotisserie at my buddy's house using his welder.  I'll be taking my car over there to do the welding.  His cousin or brother gets him all the wire he needs.  Jim (my buddy) does lots of resto and autobody repair, always something going on at his place.  I'm not sure what wire he uses, but I'd bet it's pretty good.  He's very anal about stuff!

I've thought about buying a welder, but when I got one just up the road that I can use - I just can't justify the expense.  I don't have plans for one after I get the car done.   I'd love to have one, I'm new to welding (the rotisserie was my first welding project since highschool) and had a blast putting the rotisserie together.

I'll ask him if he's heard of that wire and if he uses it next time I see him.

Well you won't need to ask him now. I was at my local welding supply store yesterday and wanted to order some myself.

Turns out Lincoln bought out Harris and now Twenty Guage is discontinued. Probably an issue regarding inner competition on the Lincoln wire line up being offered..

Mike,
That bites!  Sucks to see a good product taken off the shevles!  Hopefully the Lincoln wire is just as good or at least close!

Hip to be Square - I hated that song by Heuy Lewis & the News and still do to this day.  However, I've got a new appreciation for the song tonight!!!

Earlier today I marked the reference points for measuring the body on the floor of the garage (on tape) and got around to measuring the marks after putting the kids to bed.  She measured up well within tolerances!!!   :woohoo:
