Hey Sean......The paint looks great. I am glad someone else likes the Rust-oleum. I did not now that you could get a smooth coat.......Several years ago.....I actually painted my 84 Toyota truck with the stuff...(silver)..took about 11 cans and I was after the hammered look. It turned out great and lasted about 5 years........done something different since then......Used the bronze color but it hasn't held up that well........guess another paint job is in the future......

Thanks! I'm really happy with the way they turned out. Way better than the way they were. The Toyota is pretty cool! never would have thought of doing a whole car/truck with it!!!

Unfortunately there hasn't been any progress since my last update. Aside from the 9 to 5, I've been busy taking classes to finish up my degree and my wife is now working the second shift (3:30 to midnight) so I got the kids to look after in the evenings as well. It makes for busy days!!!

I've still got her and haven't given up. She's just been on the back burner as other things have taken priority.

Finally back at it! Went to Walmart and picked up a couple small garbage pails, a few gallons of vinegar, some salt, and a few other items to make my own evapo-rust. But before I could start removing rust, I had to finish taking apart the lower control arms. I pulled out the torsion bars which came out pretty easy. Then it was on to removing one of the torsion bar adjustment bolts. It took some WD-40, some heat and the impact gun to get it out. Once that was removed, I took off the bumpers and it was on to the spindles. I�m know I went about it in an unorthodox way, but it worked. I dug out the bushing with a little heat via a propane torch and an awl � being careful not to scratch anything. After digging out as much of the bushing as I could, I used clamp with a long bolt to press out spindle. Repeated the process for the other lower control arm.

Before I dunk them in the home made brew, I need to get a pair of sway bar mounting brackets and the paint to seal them to keep them from rusting again.

Made up a batch of homemade rust remover and dropped the LCAs in . My recipe was:

4 gallons of white vinegar
24 ounces of lemon juice
1 cup of salt

Mixed all the ingredients in a 5 gallon trash can I got from Walmart. Man, does it stink! I mixed everything in the garage, but I�m definitely moving it outside. I�m going to put a box over it to keep the creatures out of it. The temps here aren�t optimum, it�s in the 50s for a high and will get down into the 30s at night. I hear that will slow the process. I�ve got time so no biggie.

Once they are done soaking, I�m going to pressure wash them to get all solution off as well as any gunk that�s left over. They will get a bath in water and baking soda to neutralize any remaining solution. Then they will get dried with a heat gun to mitigate flash rusting. Next I�ll weld on the Hotchkis sway bar brackets. Finally, they will get a coating of Krylon battery protector to imitate the cosmoline finish.

Interested in how well your homeade rust killer works on removing rust.

I noticed your LCA's don't have the front sway bar mounts on them.
Do you plan to weld on any?

Me too, Mike! This is my first time trying this so I'm curious how it will come out.

I have a set of Hotchkis sway bar mounts ordered. Should be here this weekend.

So... It's been over a year since I've done ANYTHING with the car. Argh!!! But that's the way life goes and the cool thing about the restoration process is that it will always be there through thick and thin...patiently wait for attention when you can give it!

The lemon juice rust remover project went sorta OK. Something came up and the parts ended up sitting in the concoction for about 2 months (long story which I won't get into here). It looked like it would have worked great if I would have gotten the LCAs out in time.

Anywho... It's always great when boxes arrive!!! My front drum to disk brake conversion kit from Right Stuff came in yesterday. Of course I had to open up the boxes and do the parts inventory. I think I was more excited to just touch the parts - the whole like a kid on Christmas thing. I know we've all been there!
