Should we go back to "approved" membership?
« on: November 10, 2008 - 09:54:07 PM »
I have not been on the site all day, but there have been three spammers just today that I have seen. One porn related.

I do know that screening the new folks is time consuming for the moderators, but the question needs to be asked.  :2cents:

I vote yes,but the one down fall is I have had a few "referrals" that I have sent here get turned down or left waiting. Why? I don't know. I told them to resubmit again (one time I PM'd Rev and let her know that they were legit, yes it has been a while)

It's something only Admin can do. IMO, Admin should set the visual verification to high (if it isn't already). Problem with having it approved is Ross is hardly logged in so that means "real" users have to wait, days sometimes weeks, may not be good for business....... :dunno: I've had a bad run with them too, same forum software, seems as though these spammers are getting better every week.  :-\ Not only that but unless you're logged in every day it can get time consuming.

I agree with approved membership, but someones gotta check daily for new applicants. What does the screening process entail?

Admin only gets to see the User name, IP address and email. It's a simple task (in 90% of cases) determining the "real" users from the spam/fake. After a while you just get use to fake IP addresses or those from other countries and you know which ones to not allow. That and emails like viagra4free@viagra100055.com make life rather simple especially when they have very unusual user names like: M%do11 or Chrissyforsexmagic, etc.

Makes perfect sense. I agree, the sooner the better. I caught a couple bad ones this morning.

I voted yes. And started a poll for turning on registration filters. Also a poll to add another moderator.

We may be able to add another mod after the voting, then we can ask by vote or nominee for the new moderator

You guys are correct, if there is another mod added their duty would/should entail screening memberships ect. as an requirement of that positon.  Also I think that the mods we have would do ok with a little more freedom of manuever with controls.  I think the mods we got do a great job, keep in mind that we do not have a dedicated full time mod like we did when Laura was here.  So With that being said I think they do a great job keeping this thing moving along.   :2cents:
