Paint for chrome on 70 tail light bezel (black)
« on: November 10, 2008 - 10:11:37 PM »
Has anyone discovered a specific type of satin paint to reproduce the black border on the outside edge of the chrome bezels??   I can't get mine to bond to the chrome.

Is the black paint on the  area above the tail lights the same texture and finish?

Thanks .... chaps70rt

The tail panel was Organisol, but the only 1970 Challenger that was blacked out in this area were the T/A models. (in case you did not know)

I am not sure what paint was used on the light housings, but it is thinner.

Thanks guys .... is this available in a can, or do I need to have a body shop shoot it??

The black out on the rear panel (where the lock mechanism is) seems to be up for debate.   I have seen many posts that indicate that different people had this black out treatment on their original cars.    That being said, I know that the T/A Challenger always had this done.   I just like the look over the painted area, but that might change.   Car is going for paint in January, but I need to get these details ironed out.

Thanks again .... .chaps70rt

I used SEM trim black on my tail bezels, it stuck good and looks close enough to original I think only a concours judge might notice it. paint never sticks to chrome all that well, but if you clean it real good ( I use 203 on everything ) and get the parts nice and warm before you shoot it I've had good luck.

Thanks AMXguy ..... From what you are saying, it should be really clean and using the 203 will accomplish this.   I wil try that.   I used trim black on mine and it peeled when touched a week later.   I think I will clean it really well, then hit it with the organosol black.    Cheers ..... chaps70rt

I didn't have to on my tail light bezels but I have scuffed chrome up a little with fine sandpaper a few times, it seems to give the paint a little more tooth. organisol should work but is definetly not original if that matters to you, and as has been said painting around the taillight section of a '70 is only original on a T/A. if you want some action around the taillights you could find a SE trim panel to dress it up, but it's your car so it's whatever look you're after, I probably worry too much about originality.

I don't have mine painted yet, but most people I talk to at car shows have done what AMXguy suggested - They lightly scuff the area to be painted, and then apply something similar to Organisol.  (Of course, you would want to mask off the chrome area that you are keeping before scuffing, to avoid any accidental scuffs!)  That's what I plan to do when I get to that stage.

By the way, in case you wanted to make your avatar picture a little smaller (to eliminate the scroll bars), I resized it.

I thought all 70 taillights had the black paint around the edge of the chrome? I have a couple of partial sets and you can see whats left of the black paint on all of them. I didnt think it was just T/A's that had this   :dunno:

I believe you are correct about the black on the chrome bezels.   All chrome was painted this way (from my understanding).    The debate was the panel above the tail lights and below the trunk lid.  It was my impression that some R/T cars had this blacked out also.    Regardless, I am going to black mine out due to the colour scheme I am using.

I'm painting my tail panel this weekend with satin black from Totally Auto. I was a little confused also about how to paint this area. They have all the info you will need for all the different models, R/T, SE, base chally etc. I have a 70 R/T and they explained to me that it should be satin black on the tail panel and also the rear wing should be Satin Black also. I thought the wing was painted with Organisol but I was wrong. Good thing I talked to them first!  I'm not 100% sure where to tape it out though, any pix would be appreciated. Thanks
