Help!`97 Ram no start problem
« on: November 12, 2008 - 06:11:06 PM »
I took this truck off the road back in July but have started it every couple weeks without a problem.Last Saturday I tried to start it and it cranked and cranked but wouldn`t fire up.I was low on gas so I put 4-5 gallons of fresh gas in the tank and still just cranked.I checked for spark at the plug and nothing so I checked for at the coil with the key in run position and have no voltage.Where do I look next for voltage or any ideas where to diagnos next?I figure I can jump the coil to the battery and see if she fires but what can cause no power to the coil?Would a bad ground cause this as the truck is a little crusty from sitting? Also any place online for wiring diagrams?Of course all this happens right before a couple guys interested in buying the truck are on thier way over!    :banghead:

Given it's a 97, I guess we can rule out the ballast resistor.

This is beyond me with fuel injection and all, but as a weak guess, are all your fuses still good? Could it be the ignition switch?   :clueless:

If the "Check Engine" light does not come on when the key is turned to "Run", the possibility lies with the fuses for the ECM, or with the ASD relay. The Automatic Shutdown relay is the main relay for the computer, ignition, and fuel system. Does the fuel pump run? You need to clean the battery connections, check the fuses, and try to start the truck again. If the fuel pump does not run, or the "Check Engine" light does not come on, swap the relay with a relay for some system you do not need for the moment (like the heater blower motor, or the A/C), that uses the same type of relay. If the truck starts, it needs a relay. Even solid state relays can get "lazy" with storage, and this could be the problem.

The engine light is not on,the fuel pump runs, fuses are OK and I`ve already cleaned the battery terminals.I`ll try swapping the relays tommorow night.

Have you checked the voltage at the coil with the engine cranking? It receives power from the ASD relay momentarily at first key on and then the computer only energizes the asd relay after seeing a crank sensor signal(engine turning over). I would definitely check all the fuses and check for fault codes(cycle the key 3 times and count CEL flashes)

I see it but no help as I`m lost when it comes to electrical porblems on newer vehicles.I did swap around the relays tonight but still not firing.Engine light is not on and cycling the key does`nt get any codes.

You need to have someone crank the engine over while checking for power on the green wire with tracer at the coil pack. The coil does not need to be plugged in to check this.

Lots of them still flash the CEL but the codes relate back to something that chrysler hasn't used since 1988. They went to fault descriptions in 89 rather than the numbering system and then to the OBDII Pcode system in 96 but still had a fault message displayed with chrysler scan tool software. I have been working on driveability at a Chrysler dealer since 84, so I've seen an awful lot.   :banghead:
