Get Rid of Off Topic.
« on: November 13, 2008 - 06:54:48 AM »
Why have it if every off topic thread gets locked because someone gets their knickers in a twist ?  If your skin is that thin, don't participate in the thread, but I guess that's too simple.

So.............. might as well kill it.

:lol2: You're a brave man Keith. Perhaps have one "No Holds Bar" Thread? One stickied thread in Off Topic free of Moderation (to a point - no racisim, sexiest remarks or personal attacks) though, that is rare here, that way people know not to go in there and post, 1 thread out of thousands seems fair.  :2cents:

I've got no problem with it..... is there a option to not view a board if you don't want to?

Not that I know of, I think it's just a simple matter of don't click/enter. :dunno:

You know, my Stratus board ran into this problem a lot - when you end up with so many people (and frankly a lot of those guys were a-holes) you get a LOT of arguments.  They finally just put disclaimers at the top of the "Whatever Forum" as we called it, saying "Enter at your own risk - if you don't like it, don't read it, and don't cry to the moderators about it.  You've been warned."

I think we hold the members here to a higher level of professionalism, which I APPRECIATE.  However, as it often became a topic of argument on the Stratus board, "freedom of speech" is indeed one of our rights.  Phrases such as, "I may not agree with what you say but I'll defend your right to say it" became commonplace.  Even I've learned to just click the top-right 'X' button before getting myself all fired up over what someone else wrote.

So in closing, I think whereas we can expect our members to act appropriately and AVOID arguable topics, there is also an appropriate way to RESPOND or REACT to those topics - it's a double-edged sword.

I also say it's a car club, not a political club or a racial club or a gay marriage club or a stem-cell research/gun-control/animal rights club...  So my next post will probably be about Vipers - the car, not the species.  :)

Why eliminate the Off Topic section?   :dunno:  Seems to me to be a better idea to stop posting threads about issues that involve politics/politicians/abortion/gun control/racial/gay rights....etc....   There are thousands of things non car related that qualify as off topic while at the same time they are non controversial.  Let's try that approach instead of eliminating the entire section.....     :grinyes:

Oldschool,

You're right, there are lots of topics that qualify as off topic, and they include politics/politicians/abortion/gun control/racial/gay rights....etc....   I certainly don't want to be the guy who has to make up the list of acceptable / nonacceptable topics.

I still think that if you can't post off topic threads in off topic, why have it ?

If you're gonna take your toys and go home crying you're better off not playing. I've never asked for any thread to be locked and never will.

I don't think we should remove it, for the most part everyone here is respectfull to others, when someone gets out of line members let them know.  I think if something is offensive to you, don't read it as sometimes it is taken out of context as everything here is written not spoken

I think that is the point here. It's not about the political threads or "massive arguments" it's the fact threads seem to have been locked when it was nothing more than a WARM (at best) debate. No personal insults, yelling, crying or kicking. That keeps coming up, it's no about that. Seems when someones views are different it's time to get locked when in the real world it's only differing opinions. Last time I checked it wasn't a bad thing, or is it? I'm not into politics, could care less, I won't post in religious threads and I'm not racist or sexiest.

I will in some threads find a post I like or disagree with and voice my opinion, as, well, that is what forums are about - opinions. The correct way to approach this is to PM those (2 or 3 people) who are getting at each other (if there is anyone at all, it's really clean here) NOT lock the entire thread, IMO that's poor practice and lazy. Why should those involved in a healthy clean debate get their toys taken off by those with "powers" because a few people disagree? Seems rather restricting to me. We're all good friends here and IMO we in most cases keep it clean and above the belt. Someone steps out of line send them a PM to let them know to just calm down or move on, simple IMO.

:iagree:  Threads are locked too early IMO.  We're adults here.  Even if things get a little heated here, it's still pretty respectable compared to other forums I've seen.  I don't remember seeing any personal attacks, just differences in opinion, but isn't that life?  Everyone is entitled to their opinion, even if someone else doesn't like it or not.  Often times "touchy" topics are brought about because someone wants to express their views on something, which is fine. I think that our forum is welcoming of most topics and I think that our members here feel that they may want to express their opinion because there is a listening ear here.  :2cents:

.......Now here is a topic that could get ugly....but I'm gonna post it anyways...

From the Freakin Idiots At Work Dept.....does the A in ABC not stand for American?

ABC NEWS BANS FLAG LAPEL PINS!

YESTERDAY THE BRASS AT ABC NEWS ISSUED ORDERS FORBIDDING REPORTERS TO WEAR LAPEL PIN AMERICAN FLAGS OR OTHER PATRIOTIC INSIGNIA. THEIR REASONING WAS THAT ABC SHOULD REMAIN NEUTRAL ABOUT 'CAUSES'.

SINCE WHEN IS SUPPORT FOR PREVENTING DEATH AND DESTRUCTION SOME SORT OF A 'CAUSE'? SINCE WHEN IS PATRIOTISM TO BE DISCOURAGED?

I URGE YOU TO BOYCOTT ABC AND ITS SPONSORS AND AFFILIATES. WE ARE SLOWLY LOSING EVERYTHING OUR COUNTRY STANDS FOR AND EVERYTHING OUR MEN AND WOMEN FOUGHT AND DIED TO PRESERVE!

PLEASE FORWARD THIS TO AS MANY AS YOU CAN. THIS HAS BEEN VERIFIED THROUGH: http://www.snopes.com/rumors/noflags.asp
