question about rear valance
« on: November 15, 2008 - 01:55:58 AM »
Hi, I am building a 71 cuda right now at work, and am putting the back of the car together now.  I didnt take the car apart, and Im wondering if there is supposed to be a piece that goes below the rear bumper and the above the valance.  I know the valance I have fits terrible, and it's getting modified anyway, but it still seems like something's missing.  thanks in advance!
Tyler

the 70 only had 2 supports that bolted on below the bumper that the valance screewed into in 71 they cahnged the design to a center support rib like in the valance Stroker just gave away tonite , possibly you have a 70 valence ?

would a 70 valance be wider?  one of the problems is that all the frame, floor, wheel houses, etc are scratch built, and two new quarters, so there isnt much for stock refernce points.  the tailpan fits fine with the quarters, and the bumper fits good, but the lower valance is nearly an inch too wide, leaving about a 2 inch gap between the bottom of the bumper and the valance.

Me thinks the quarters got tweaked (inwards) at the bottom and thus the valence appears too big. They didn't insert the valence before welding the quaters. Happened to me too - but only once!! You'll have to either move the quaters out, or cut down the valence.

cutting the valance is a hassle , you lose all the mounts on the end unless you section the valance in the middle on both sides & repaint

I don't think there is any easy way to fix this. Is it the original one that came off the car or an aftermarket one? If it's an aftermarket one, I can take some measurements off of my original for comparison.
70 Cuda, 7.0L Gen-III Hemi, Viper T56 w/9310 gearset, 3.91's, Megasquirt MS3x v3.57, Innovate wideband, Firm Feel upper arms, torsion bars, springs and strut rods, QA1 DA shocks. I did everything on this car except the fancy paint stuff and I drive it...and I can't seem to stop messing with it....

its aftermarket.  the quarter still arent attatched in that area, since there are no trunk extensions in it yet, so im able to spread the quarters apart where the valance mounts, but not far enough.  im going to be cutting the valance up anyway to eliminate the bumper guards.  its an aftermarker panel.

Check out my thread below -  I did this exact procedure of cutting down the valence, plus the bumper brackets to move the bumper up tight to the quarters, thus eliminating the 1974 5mph bumper fillers... While you could cut the valence in the centre, that means removing and cutting the lic. plate brackets. I chose to cut at both "wheelie-wheel" holes, take a bit out of both sides, then fill & re-attach them. Hope it helps!
