70 Cuda Grill Restoration
« on: November 21, 2008 - 05:43:19 PM »
The grill that i started out with was a junkyard find. but original nonetheless. i first got the pieces i needed from ebodycrazy4ever  :bananasmi which so kindly cut XL as i ended up needing more then i thought. i trimmed the pieces and the damage so they were compatible. The "Glue" i used was a product called plast-ex which comes in 2 parts, powder and liquid. i used packing tape on the front side and stuck the pieces together, then i would fill the void with the powder and next add the liquid.once hard i would remove the tape and shape the area back to original. i found it worked well, it just takes practice.
i used the plastex as a filler as much as i could but it is hard to sand so when i got it fairly good i used a little bit of finishing puty to fill small imperfections.to prep i sanded the whole thing down until i could not feel any texture from the old paint.

the problems:

after sanding i painted the back first with flat black just to keep it clean looking. next was the lower grill, i painted that a semi gloss black but remember not to sand the texture of the black unless you use a textured black paint. next was the tedious job of masking off the black :faint:. as for the argent paint i had read a thread on a diffrent forum, that said Krylon made a paint that was very similar to totally auto's dark argent. so i picked up a can of black krylon textured shimmer paint and a can of the graphite colour for 6 bucks each. i tested the colour and the graphite colour was near perfect except it was a little light. so what i did was put on a light coat of the black first and then proceded to do the rest with multiple thin coats of the graphite paint. it added the little bit of darkness i wanted and turned out awesome.

If you have any questions just ask :cooldancing:
