#'s matching 71 r/t Challenger
« on: November 21, 2008 - 06:51:25 PM »
I need/want opinions...I have a Numbers matching w/ tags and build sheet 71 R/T Challenger that's not selling.  I think our cars have softened in price somewhat due to the economy.

I'm considering keeping this car and restoring.

I'd like feedback on whether or not to keep it it's original color.  I've always been a cuda guy and may or may not keep this car.  How much am I screwing up by not keeping it the proper color.

The whole economy has sunk. If that is the original paint, it doesn't look bad from here.   :grinno:

This car is in great shape for never haven been restored.  It needs light body work, new driver seat cover, and carpet.  That's about it.   If I do this it will be ground up.

My 2 cuda's aren't #'s matching and I'm currently building my 71 the way I want.   (currently in paint :droolingbounce:)

Although I don't need a 3rd, the challenger is growing on me.  But I'd prefer a different color????

The car w/ pics is listed here under 71 R/T Challenger.

I agree, Tawny Gold is a really cool color. I was in the same place you are. With a car that had somewhat rare paint that was not my favorite. I do not regret the decision to keep it the original color. In the end though only you can decide what is best for you. If you are going to sell it then definitely keep it the original color.

If you want to sell a numbers car, keep it as original as you can, including the paint. The market (and the economy) is not good right now- at some point I have an "R" Code Hemicuda for sale, but not now!!

Whatever you do to make the car different from original will HURT the value of your car!! People who want matching numbers will be afraid of a car that was repainted a non-original color. My  :2cents:

I think that changing the color in this case won't hurt the final value of the car. If it was factory a high impact color, like plum crazy or citreon yella, then yeah paint it original, but Tawny Gold is not a popular color and you will have to find a person who really likes that color. Just my  :2cents: At the end of the day it's your car and do what you feel. For me I hate Tawny Gold and would paint it a different color, but that's me.

I notice in your picture the vinyl roof. What engine, transmission and what other options does it have?

What were you asking for it?

It's worth about $30-40K restored taking it down to the bare shell. The tawny gold paint will make it harder to sell, you are experiencing that now. But so will a repaint in another color. So if you paid 17K for it, you've $20K left or so to paint it and buy all the new fresh parts to make it ground up, and do all the labor your self.

It's sort of an in between car. Almost too nice to restore, but really needs a paint job and engine detailing to make it pop. Pictures in direct sunlight might help, especially with that color. And some elbow gease to clean and polish it up. They mentioned it's not the best time to flip cars. You needed a bigger safety margin between the buy and sell price.

This is 383 auto, ralley dash(perfect condition other than clock doesn't work.  Interior is in perfect shape other than carpet and driver seat.  I have fender tag #'s listed here under cars for sale.  I paid 15k + had trans rebuilt and cooler lines replaces, driveshaft balanced. plus transport...18,500 in the car.  Best offer over 18,500 will be considered.

Thanks for advice on cleanup...It's next on the list :working:

Yes the color is a hard sell.  My old cuda was citron mist and looked great but couldn't give the car away that color.  If it was any other color I would have sold it 10 times over for what I was asking for it.  But the guy on here that now owns it sure makes it look good.  Solar guy I believe.
