Rear Springs
« on: November 24, 2008 - 12:55:41 AM »
The rear springs are next to be refinished on my car. It's coded for the A36 package so shouldn't there be an extra half-leaf on one side? The part numbers are correct (3600024 \ 3600034) and verified against a Broadcast Sheet from another 440-4 A36 Challenger) but only six leaves per side  :dunno:

They were set alongside a pair from a low mileage Superbird for comparison and except for being obviously shorter, the arch was the same so back on they'll go.

Cool Neil, now for Rear Spring Hardware kits, as well as the U-bolts.

My Challenger R/T also had the A36 package and had the same springs. The a$$-end sagged so low that I replaced them with the crappy HD Mopar Perf springs years ago. You may want to get them re arched by a local spring company to add an inch or two. It should only cost about $85 to get a level stance while keeping your original springs.

Russ, I've been back & forth on this issue for some time myself. I'm all for re-using the OE stuff when possible but it seems like old springs are not the best thing to try and salvage.  The "rebuild kits" I've seen run about $60.00 then you sill have old metal that needs refinishing & may not perform well. After seeing Moparal's new HD springs (2-250 w/shipping) if I have to spend money in this area that's what I'm going with.  If you want the rear to sit up Espo can build a new set to spec for another hundred.  In the mean time I will just clean & paint what I have.

The new HD Springs from Mopar Performance are junk steel from Mexico and the front spring eye starts to look like it is bending backwards. Go with re-arching your original AMERICAN :wavingflag: STEEL,  or go with the Espos.

While you have yours out. Do  you mind measuring your leaves so that I can build myself  an original set?  I threw mine out  years ago. I need the measurements from the center bolt.  Thanks.

The current plan is to blast, repaint, install a new hardware kit. I've leaned towards rearching unless beyond repair from the beginning :2thumbs:

I'll take measurements next time i see them  Is that from the center bolt out on each leaf?

Yes Russ. Please measure to the tip of each exept for the top leaf, which I measure to the center of the hole. Just being close is good enough.

Here is what I get for a standard load 5 leaf. measured from the bottom center bolt.
Top leaf front half 22-1/2", rear half 36"
second leaf front half 21-1/8", rear half 30-3/8"
third leaf front half 16-1/4", rear half 21-1/8"
fourth leaf front half 11-1/4", rear half 11-1/2"
5th bottom leaf front half 7-1/4", rear half 2-1/2"

Thanks

Rob, I really had hoped to post these measurements sooner :sadwavey:  These are from the '024' set of leaves. When assembled they have two clamps versus three clamps on the '034' set. Second picture is of the longest, or main leaf, moving through to the shortest leaf which has the part number that will match a broadcast sheet.

This seems to be a common topic. I am fixing to start on my project and have been wondering the same things. I noticed there has been no comments on the springs Magnum Force offers for the E body. They offer a lowered rear spring. Has anyone used them or know anyone who has that can give a realistic opinion of there fit and performance.

I am leaning toward just rebuilding my stockers. It seems to be the most economical and I know they fit and are quality parts. If there is a QUALITY option, I would like to know about it. Any input?

When my Challenger was on the trailer headed to the shop which was to carry out the car's rebuild, I was satisfied with the stance at that time and so when the time came to address the rear springs, I solicited opinions through threads here, also researched similar threads on other forums.

Mainly positive opinions for Detroit Eaton, and Espo as well as a mixed bag regarding the Mopar Performance Super Stock sets.

I intend for many cruising miles to be put on my car so the refurbish/reinstall-with-new-hardware process won out.

Think "what's my car's intended purpose?" while tempering how you answer that question with the fact that you're dealing with a vehicle (and the parts it still retains) which are anywhere from 35 to 40 years old.

Thanks Russ.   But I noticed that the 024 and 034 both have even numbers. Which side did this spring come off of?
