Where are common rust areas on '70 Challenger convertibles?

Where isn't there rust on convertible challengers?   :banghead:  Once I had mine media blasted it seemed to have more rust than good sheet metal.  Mine was a New England car so that may explain its condition.  But to answer your question, the trunk, the floors, both quarters, the rear frame rails, door hinges, and hood hinges, all seem to be pretty common depending on the overall care of the car.  In addition to all that, the previous owner of mine let battery acid basically eat away the inner fender well.   :pullinghair:  This one may never see the road again.   :violin:

 Mines a California car so any rust was caused by tree leaves and other debris, not salted roads or extreme weather.

 Unseen areas such as below the quarter window down at the joint to the rocker panels. The little gap in the window seal must have let stuff down there. The drainage is poor at that point of the quarter also.

 The front fenders, just in front of the rocker is a rust prone area caused by debris sitting down there. I once found a couple hand fulls of dry oak leaves in the hood where the hinge bolts up too. No rust but quite a surprising find. I suspect they get down behind the hood on top of the cowl then blow around till they find a home. Just a few places on all Challengers to keep an eye on. :2cents:

Depending on where the car came from and when it was driven, all the above areas mentioned are a pretty good bet. I had a 76K mile 70 R/T that was pretty rust free, and it was from the snow belt of NY. What saved it was the original owner never drove it in the winter.

Kinda funny about rust and convertibles, you just never know for sure what you will find. The 71 Barracuda vert I am always kicking myself about had a hole in the front floorboard you see the ground through so it had issues even back in 86-87. The 71 Challenger vert that was my dream car was about as rust free as you could get. I pulled back the carpet once and there was not even surface scale on the floor board. Just factory FE5 red. It now has rust through in both lower quarters or did last year when I last saw it.

I guess I've been lucky with e-body ragtops. My 70 cuda droptop has only had the outer quarters replaced. I guess at the time the work was done no rear inner quarters were available, so i have them ready for the next re-work of the car when I'll replace the existing (or lack thereof). But the floor boards and trunk are all original and nice.
