How I joined the MoPar faithful.
« on: November 25, 2008 - 05:09:48 PM »
Hi friends,

My name is Don and I've always loved the 'E'-bods. Grew up in So. Cal. and was just a little fart when I whined enough for my dad to start taking me to the races instead of his drinking buddies-mom may have helped out a bit there too! That was '68 and I turned 7 that Sept. 11. O.C.I.R. was like our second home and we made most of the fuel shows in the area and all the big ones. So we used to see all the top touring Stock, S/S and Pro-Stock cars, and of course Mopar bods of all kinds graced the flopper ranks and I was just hooked.  Dad always told me "The Hemi-that's the engine, boy" and every couple of years he pulled into the GM plant where he worked in a brand new Dodge-management loved him. I promised myself when he took me to see the new '68 Chargers that I would have one when I grew up. I learned to drive in dad's Charger and saved my pennys 'till I found a clean '68 383/330 Charger-and there's some great stories there. I've had many Mopes since, but as much as I always loved the 'E's, I always had 'B' or 'A' bods with a few quick RRs, a GTX and so on. I don't have any pics of my cars in my new comp. yet, so I posted a shot of Christophe Schwartz' Olympia Charger I took at Monza in Italy. I write a bit and went to see the big 'B' battle the sporty cars at Le Mans and Monza, so figured I'd use a pic of my French friends ride to start. Well, I've been thinking for awhile I need the '70 Challenger I always wanted. I've got a few cars I need to move first, but this looks like a great site with a good bunch of folks, and I figured I'd start to look into things and maybe make a few contacts and friends. I build engines, and will do the rest of the drivetrain and susp. out of necessity, but really enjoy the engines most. I've done a bit of body work-no big pro-prob. farm most of that out. So, guess I'd better get to work on getting the other cars ready to sell. So, hi everybody and hope I didn't give you readers cramp!
Don

Good luck with your search.  Prices are starting to come down in some areas, so your timing may be perfect.

That's a way cool Charger your friend has.  Good luck on your search.  You say you grew up in SoCal - Orange County, obviously.  Where are you now?

Oh, and welcome to the site!

Thanks, guys.

I keep coming back to a '70 Challenger-although every time I see a nice '70 'Cuda I change my mind for awhile! I like the later ones too, but always hoped for a '70. Hopefully I can get some cash together while the prices are a little soft. I was thinking somewhere between a clean driver and a minor rust only roller depending on the deal. I'd love to build 500" or so of big block, but have really started to want to do a Trans Am style street car with a stroker LA even more.  I love the restos-but am thinking more along those lines.

Thanks guys,

Greg, I grew up in Fullerton, Ca back when the street scene was still huge and mostly all musclecars. It was great back then before it got so over crowded and crazy. I upheld MoPar honor cruising Whittier Blvd. and sometimes Van Nuys-which was quite a bit farther. It was weird how fast the kids forgot MoPar, 'cause in the late '70s when I'd cruise Whittier I was one of the very few running one. Everybody had a Camaro, Chevelle or Mustang. Even with 4 packed lanes for several miles you'd only see a few Mopes! There was my '68 Charger, a guy with an RR, a '70 GTX and a couple of A-bods somewhat regularly, and a Sub-Lime '70 Cuda occasionally and a Superbird showed up once. Van Nuys was just wild with people packed 6-deep and all yelling for you to 'Light 'em up!" They finally closed down those cruises for the usual reasons and we started cruising "Angelo's" which was a cool burger hang-out on Harbor-I think, in Anaheim. I got to run the Charger and my GTX at "The County" several times. It sure was sad when they closed it down. Lynn Rose (mgr) let me wander around with my camera and I got a shot of my Charger under the big O.C.I.R. sign saying; "Last Drag Race" Anyway, moved up here to Medford, OR in '89 and we have a nice little strip just a few miles up the road. There's a decent street scene around here for the population. We've got a 500+ car Medford Cruise, and car shows at the expo. Pretty area. Blah, blah, blah...

Hey, L8R

Don:
No "reader's cramp" at all - That is a great story.  And also a really interesting picture of the Charger at Monza - I would not have imagined seeing something like that over there. (That is an interesting contrast with the old BMW M1 in the background)

Yes, this is a great site, with some very helpful people...You will be amazed what you can learn around here.  Best of luck in the search for an E-body, and welcome to the site!

Hi to all,

Wow, you folks have some gorgeous cars. Um, yeah-the way the Oly Charger story happened was pretty wild. He races prototypes that are about door handle high with that thing-what a sight! If I was going to tell a bit of that story, should I be starting a new thread? It's not an 'E', but pretty interesting MoPar stuff. I thought that pic would come up as an Avatar-but I guess it's fun to see. Here's me doing a slo-mo Dukes of Hazzard entry.
