Which Stall Converter to buy?
« on: May 07, 2004 - 11:27:42 AM »
My cam is a mopar purple cam(mechanical)------  Adv duration is .284 - @.50 is .241 / .528 lift and is rated at 2400-6600rpm......

Now I have 1.6 rockers which makes it a .561 lift.......

I want the car to have good street manners !!!!

So what stall converter should I run........I have a new Coan stall right now rated at 2800-3200...(not installed or box open yet) But I have people telling me thats to high for the street???? Would a 2400 B&M Holeshot be good for my application??? Maybe nitrous down the road...?

Always had 4 speed cars so this auto thing is new...

thx for the replies....

A 2800-3200 stall seems high, but I guess we have to factor in what the gear ratio of your rear end is. If it's something like a 3.23, then you'll have to be driving VERY fast. A 4.10, then you might be right on ??? I'm sure others can point you into the proper direction, but the 2400 sounds more reasonable to me.

this is the problem of matching parts , you need to have the stall speed into the powerband of the cam so minimum you would need 2500
with a 26" tire & 3.23 gears your rpm at 70mph will be 3000 rpm so as long as the stall is higher than than 2500 & below 2900 you are fine  if the stall is above 2900 rpm you need to go to 3.55 gears  this way you will be doing 70 MPH at 3200 rpm & the converter will ock & prevent the converter from slipping & generating too much heat & burning the tranny up

So it sound like i bought the right stall converter..........And then i should choose my gears depending on stall........I was thinking like 3.91.....and The new Mickey Thompson ET Drag Radials......

Like maybe 275/60/15's or 295/50/15's   ????

what ya think?

sounds good
The 275 /60 will decrease highway RPM slightly over the 295/ 50
