New 15 X 7 & 15 X 8 rallye wheels
« on: November 28, 2008 - 01:01:02 AM »
I bought a new set of rally wheels for my 70 Cuda so it would have the correct 15 inch wheels and now would like to paint them the correct silver color. The powder coat looks ok but the color is way off from the correct tint. I had tried to buy some ppg DDR 8568 argent silver awhile back and my local paint store told me it is no longer avalible. Is there another color close or is it just not avalible in my area? I had a dupont centari color non-smudge aluminum 98169A and the dupont paint store told me it is no longer avalible either. I don't want to paint them out of a rattle can as the paint just dosn't hold up well. I havn't ordered my new tires yet as I wanted to paint the wheels first. I'm going with 275/60X15 on the rear and 235/60X15 on the front. I took a picture of the wheels and I bought the wheel package from davids rally wheels. He sells them on ebay and does have a web site alsohttp://www.davidsrallywheels.com/. I'll post a picture so you can all check out my new rally wheels. Let me know if anyone has a paint code for the silver paint.

I think that Year One sells the correct paint by the quart. I know they did when I first restored my 72 Challenger, granted that was almost 10 years ago, but I think they still carry it. If not you might try Totally Auto Inc.

Just curious, have you thought about Powder Coating them? Not sure if they can mix that colour. Powder coating is stronger which obviously means longer lasting. Just throwing an idea out there. Not even sure it's possible (powder coating that colour).

Eastwood carries it in a can if your looking to paint them.  If your going for an original look the rims must be painted Satin black on the back side and then the Rallye Silver on the face side.  I have been doing some research on this as well, as I have the same issue of aftermarket 15" rims that are in the off color.  This is the route I will be going.

I would definitely try to get them powdercoated. It will stay on a lot better, esp. when putting on the ( unbelievable tight ) stainless rings...  I build trikes and sidecars for a living and we powdercoat all wheels silver with clearcoat powder. I`ve matched it with my ralleys and the color is practically the same. ( although it looks to be the org. paint on them, I `m not 100% sure...)  even if the color is a little off, I would still go for powder.
The color on your wheels is what we used to use some years ago, but it`s more gray than silver. there are great colors available in powder, just take your time and find a company that uses the right color for you. ( or is willing to order..)

The wheels are silver powder coated but the color is way off and I was not sure if anyone has had any luck getting a powder coat silver that is close to the original rally wheel silver color.

That would be great and I would give the powder coat color a shot as the powder coating is tougher for sure.

I brought my original wheels in for powdercoating and was very satisfied with the results. The color is so close I don't think anyone would be able to notice the difference and the finish is tough as nails.
