if the car is not registered in Calif, they would have no record of it and assumming since he said it was not in his name, he probably did what alot of Californians do to avoid sales tax for as long as can and not transfer the title. Also Calif records dont go back that far, so it would have to be currently registered. I would file the claim, as if you think you are not getting paid and let him address it, he will have no problem if it is legit. Can I ask did you pay in full or you looking for the $1,000 deposit back? Paypal is tricky on deposits. Good luck keep us posted 

I payed $1000 deposit via paypal and wired the rest to his bank account. In the auction he says it's a California car so unless it's been awhile since it's been registered I'm thinking there should be a record of the vin#? Sounds fishy?

If he has all the money he should get off his butt and transfer the car and title to you. The only reasons I can see are that he is extremely lazy or extremely crooked. You did your part and now he needs to do his. I swear things like this make me very apprehensive about large dollar auctions. I am glad you made the claim while you still could. I think I would be hopping a plane and checking things out firsthand. Here is hoping you get the situation resolved quickly.

Once they get their money, some people get real slow. I would have told him that he would get the rest of his money when I got the car. Period.

After reading his feedback, he has not sold anything worth a large sum of money. If he has many cars cought in an estate sale, why not sell them as well. Times are tough and maybe this is his scam, but i agree that it doesn't appear to be that. Some people do work slow once they have the money. In retrospect, next time no money after deposit until the vin is transferred or on a car carrier. How are you getting the car? To cross the border, you have to fax a copy of the title to US customs 72 hours before it crosses. I live in acanada and bought a 70 Challenger from the US, but it had to be within driving distance (10 hours or less) Have the US custioms do a search on the VIN # and they can give you more info. I am glad you filed with ebay as if he is legit, then he will undrstand his slowness has made you nervous. Good luck

As odd as it might seem that happens all the time. Guys have spent way more than 15k on a car they've never seen in person. You can thank the internet for these type of transactions. I bet if you took a poll you would be shocked on how many people do this. Heck I sold a T/A and the guy paid 40k (in full) without seeing the car. Of course I sent many photos with a video. Even as the seller I was nervous as you never know what someone expects.

Back to the original topic, I'm glad you did the report. He could be legit just lazy as someone mentioned. Maybe that'll get him moving.

 I see you mentioned my scam in your other post,believe me you did the right thing filing for a refund. My seller had every excuse in the book and I waited too long to file. I consider my self VERY lucky that I found a Detective and a District Attorney that wanted to help me.  It will start out as a civil case because the time involved -just because he hasn't sent it yet doesn't mean he's not going to.It took 5 months for mine to become criminal. You can still get your money back in a civil case but he will do NO time in jail. I finally got my money back and my seller?He GOT 4 years!!!!  MY advice is to call call call. Hopefully you have kept every piece of information to document your case. Wish you luck and will help any way I can

I took the same gamble when I wired the payment for my Viper - that was over 30 grand!  But by then I had all the guy's information, and was already traveling to his residence for pick-up.  I figured if I got there and there was no car, I could just burn his house down. 

My question though is this - you wire transferred the money, as I did.  Is there any way of pulling the money back via your bank if you explained that it was a scam?  Of course, this only works if the guy left the money in his account, which I would assume a scammer would not - I was just wondering if anyone knows what can be done in this instance.  You have the account information - you can probably at least launch some sort of investigation based on that.

I'll be keeping an eye on this - I hope it works out in the end.

The answer for me was NO.  I encountered a near scam, contacted BOTH banks, and since the money had cleared, it couldn't be yanked back.  I had to wait on pins and needles, call several times, and finally got most of it back.  He was "kind" enough to keep a small part for his own pocket, but what are you going to do?  It was too small to go hunt him down.

 I just got in on E-Bays VVP plan. The guy said he will put some pressure on the seller and that I am insurred if the deal goes bad. I just had to fax a bunch of info ( which I did) and he would take care of the rest! He did say as some have mentioned that he has seen California DMV take up to 8 weeks to issue a title  ( in the sellers defence) but that he should have had that all done "before" he listed the car! He also said I did the right thing! One more day and I would be out of luck in regaurds to e-bays VPP. The scary thing as when I gave him the sellers name and address I could here him typing and in seconds he had his place of employment etc.... scary huh! --digital world!!!
At best the seller made a mistake by not having a title in his name in hand before he listed , or at worst I get my money back? Time ( 30 days)will tell....?
 I am hoping for the car though, much to my wifes dismay!!

My god. I bought mine on ebay but my transaction was not protected by VPP (overseas buyear). I've never seen the car and tere was a bank lien on the title... and I wired whole money... fortunately all went good. However there are some "issues" with the car that seller did not revealed but I can say that they are minor compared to you problem. I keep my fingers crossed!
