Inspecting K Member
« on: November 29, 2008 - 01:23:27 PM »
Hey guys,

I'm getting ready to check out a 70 Challenger and one thing for certain is I don't want it if it has a bad K member.  Other than test driving to get a feel for the steering (to pick up on noise and odd vibrations), is there a way to check out a K member for damage by crawling under the vehicle?

Thanks, Charlie

just visual stuuf like the bottom being scarred or dented , the weld quality was usually poor around the mounts ,sometimes the tubes for the lower control arm will break out  but generally they are indestructable & do not cause a problem

Also, a k member is real easy to replace. Don't let that one inexpensive issue hold you back. They are usually under 100 bucks for most of them. Hemi and skid plate one with a badge are more of course

don't mean to hijack the thread, but the k member on my 318 cuda has the skid plate.
i'd read that this was only on hemi k members...

is there any other way to tell if mine is a hemi k member or has just had a skid plate welded on.
the skid plate on my k looks just like the pics i have seen of the hemi ones...

cheers,
aaron

You could get skid plates on other K members as well (like 440 6 pack cars). A 318 won't mount into a hemi k member because of how different the mounts are.

   :iagree:

It was probably from a 440-6 car.
